Rx 480 or wait for Vega11

First of all, I know little is known about Vega and everything is just rumours, but here there are a lot of smart people very up to date with the latest rumors 😛

I currently own a Gtx 770 2Gb. I don't game much and only 1080p so It has served me well with games on my backlog, but it is starting to show it's age with newer games (Lately I've been playing those on PS4)

I have the possibility of selling it for 100€ so here comes my doubts. Sell it now and buy a Rx 480 4Gb for 210€ (so, +110€). I could also sell it now and wait a few months for Vega 11, hoping they release it before summer and below 300€.

My other option is keep my 770gb another year or so (I have plenty of backlog games to play that handle just fine on it) and reconsider in a year what GPU to buy thouh I dont think I'll be able to sell it then for anything worthwhile. Maybe newer Nvidias though I prefer AMD after how bad Nvidia has treated Kepler users over the last 2 years.

Nobody Knows™

RX 480 is the only sure thing. Vega 11's price, performance, release date, everything, are up in the air.

As far as we know it's still another 3-4 months until vega so if you can feel like waiting go for it or for price drops on nvidia's end around then if it's not worth it.

I doubt we'll see a Polaris replacement in the next 6 months in terms of Vega. If you really want Vega, buying the cheapest 470/480 you can now (yes 4GB are fine) and selling it when Vega comes out would work fine. Just realize that Vega is going to be high end, so priced similar to 1070/1080 not 1060/480.

Get the RX480 8GB now and enjoy it. Doubt we'll see Vega before May or June, plenty of time to save up for Vega also 🙂

If you don't game much a single RX 480 will be a huge improvement for under $250. Vega will most likely not be out until late June if not July and is likely to be much more expensive.

You should wait and watch how things pan out in the gpu wars between NVidia and AMD. If Vega is anything like Ryzen they won't be able to live up to the hype but we won't know until independent reviewers can get their hands on them for testing.

I think even with Ryzen being good, a lot of people are more cool on Vega just because of the launch issues surrounding Polaris.

Also if AMD is making Vega on the same process as Ryzen and Polaris it probably won't clock up that well. That could mean good thermals, but at the expense of raw power. Perhaps that's why they've aimed Vega at the professional and HPC market where power comes into play just as much as performance.

They may cede the high end to Nvidia again, but with Ryzen being the monster that it is they can afford to let Nvidia be on top. At least the 1080Ti came in less expensive than a lot were anticipating so you won't have to pay through the nose like you did with the 1080 FE.

This is pretty obvious in my opinion. If the rx480 works for you get it. Only wait if it doesn't offer enough performance for you.

You dont game much and at 1080p, why you'd buy a high end gpu for 1080p gaming is beyond me.
