RWD Handling Question

When the back end whips out, the front wheels aren't necessarily sliding, and so the steering wheel turns on its own to maintain the direction the wheels were facing before it started to slide. (Back slides around, wheels need to maintain going the same way so you can complete the turn)

What are you supposed to do in situations like this? What needs to be taken into account?

Are you supposed to maintain control of the steering wheel and be guiding it? It whips around pretty fast and so that's why I ask.

You turn the wheel in the direction your back end is sliding to straighten out your car. Once you regain control of your car you steer whichever way you want. You DONT want to stomp brakes in most cases because this will cause more skidding and loss of steering control.

personally, when i fishtail, i give it some gas, do a 180 then start driving in reverse as if nothing happened.

yeh, people think i'm pretty cool.

In a properly set-up car, the steering wheel will go to the proper countersteer position with just a bit of minimal guidance on your part. It does happen very fast, so you have to be calm and relaxed, and just kind of coax the car to do what you want to do rather than forcing it. The trick to this kind of driving, in order to make it intuitive, is to always look and steer to exactly where you want to go. Most people fail at this because they panic and look at where they do not want to go, i.e. "OMG the tree not the tree!" WHAM!

That's what I've noticed, noticed in go kart driving that if you stop giving gas entirely, that's asking for truoble, have to at least maintain what you came in with. This might not be true for all situations though.

That's what happened, the steering wheel went to the proper position.

That's what I've noticed, noticed in go kart driving that if you stop giving gas entirely, that's asking for truoble, have to at least maintain what you came in with. This might not be true for all situations though.

Yeah thats what I failed to mention in my first post. I would keep constant on the gas, not get off the pedals completely.


P.S. this is why my next car is going to be an Audi with Quattro ;)

my advice: try it and find out. i love to whip the tail out on turns and if you dont turn the wheels in the opposite direction, you will do a 360. the more you practice, the better you will be at it. you and your car can become 1.

lesson 1. go real fast and in an intersection hit the breaks as you are starting your turn. the force and sudden shift will cause you rear end to slip. immediately slam on the gas so you can burn out of the turn. alway adjust steering wheel as needed.

edit: You want to turn the steering wheel such that the front wheels are aimed in the direction your back end is sliding in. This will cause the front of your car to end up pointing in the direction that you want to go after the apex of the turn. You should give the car tiny bursts of acceleration during this though.

If you turn the wheel in the direction to complete the turn, you will do a 360.

Lesson #2:
Don't do this when there's an unmarked cop car coming from the direction you are going unless you want the video to hit the internet. :)


As far as hitting the gas, that depends on if hitting the gas is what CAUSED it to kick out. In general, just ease up on the gas and turn the wheel to the direction your rear end is going. The idea is that you want to make the front end follow the rear rather than let the rear end get infront.
