Rustproofing

There was an older thread derailed that talked briefly about rustproofing:

My dad has an older Prius with 90~K kilometres that was never rustproofed and has never had any rust problems. We live in Toronto. The Prius is his daily drive to and from work. I have read that sometimes rustproofing makes things worse.

What are your thoughts/experience with rustproofing and rusting on newer cars (2001+)?

Dad got sucked into this horse shit from the Windsor toyota dealer. They promised it would be backed by Toyota and absolutely guarenteed his 99 Camary would never have any rust if he bought the $1000 module from them. Long story short, module died, car's full of rust and the dealer refuses to do anything about it. They are liars don't fall for it.

I've told Dad to contact Toyota in Japan and tell them how he was ripped off in the name of Toyota.

How does a module rustproof your car?

Anyways, apperently it works according to my mechanic. My dad got his 92 Camry sprayed at Canadian Tire a few times. I got my car done last year at Wal Mart. 100 bucks isn't a big deal.

I don't think new cars should be sprayed as they have that corrosion warranty for several years, I think Lexus is 7. But after that I'd get it sprayed.

If you want to keep the car, well something like Zeibart would be good. especially if they use alot of salt in Ontario.

On the other hand, if you only keep a car 1-3 years like me, don't bother.

I had a cherokee that didn't have it back in NY. It got HUGE holes through floorboards. My father in law has a cherokee of the same year of about the same mileage living in the same town and he has no rust at all. His had the factory underbody coating and mine didn't. For that car at least it made a big difference.

Did your father have to have future rustproofing beyond the factory coating?

Anyone ever try putting zinc block on your car frame. Seems to works for vessels at sea.

The car came new from the dealer with the coating. Beyond that I don't think he did anything special.

Most new cars are galvanized, and many have 5 year, 100k mile warranty on outer body rust through.

Rust proofing at the dealership is mostly worthless, as is paint protection, interior protection, etc.

I had an AMC Eagle that had factory Zeibarts rust protection. I've got to say it is the only one of my cars that never showed any rust at all during the time I had it. I think, on that car at least, it worked very well.

Incorrect. All cars, or at least MOST of them, use urethane paint, which is FAR stronger and more flexible than the lacquers and enamels that manufacturers used to use.

And as mentioned before, almost all cars have rust coverage from the factory, and have for years and years now. That's why you don't see too many 7-10 year old rust buckets now.

We paid for rust proofing for our new car recently. Dealer said that the rust warranty didn't cover anything on the bottom, so we got it. Who will be the first to call bs?
