The US (collectively) might be too much of a pussy to put rigs up there but the Russians aren't.

They don't give a crap about the caribou and their environmental record is abominable compared to US based operations but hey! Uh, Russia won't let foreign oil companies exploit the north pole, they will keep it all for domestic companies.

The article in my newpaper today contradicts this.

Says Russia is going back to TRY to find proof. Denmark/Greenland is after the same claim.

I don't have the article with me, but it mentioned some underwater mountain range (or whatever the heck it is). Russia is trying to get proof that range extends to them (thus possibly enabling the claim). Denmark/Greenland belives that same range is their proof.

Also of interest was that the problem they are encountering is much thicker ice than expected (GW ftw!), jepordizing the entire expedition.
