Got me, seems Putin is also putting in another new security force prior to elections.

These guys didn't look that bad ass to me in general.

But better than a lot of stupid training films I've seen in the past.

Putin creates new National Guard in Russia 'to fight terrorism'

The new group is meant mainly to hunt down and kill the political opposition. So they don't need to be as well trained, they just need to be good at murdering without leaving too many trails to Putin.

Reading history, it seems life is regarded as rather cheap in Russia and the former Soviet Union. My impression, anyway.

i still remember the Moscow Theatre operation where most of the 130 hostages that died were killed by the toxic gas that the counter-terrorists pumped in. It also didn't help that they refused to tell the doctors trying to save the hostages what type of gas they used.

Russian counter-terrorism is more about macho demonstrations of how they don't give a sh!t than actually saving hostages. There is something to be said for the deterrent effect of these demonstrations, but if you are in caught a terrorism situation in Russia, if terrorists don't kill you, the cops probably will.

Russian units are trained to have cannon fodder mentality.

US soldiers are trained to plan and look over your wounded.

In mother Russia, you train to give your life over quickly, Stalingrad-style.

Can't help thinking sometimes that the question applies to Russians generally.

So many things in Russia's history seem to involve a specific combination of (often drunken) incompetence and recklessness creating an opportunity for heroic self-sacrificing courage.
