Russian arms sales to Iran. If we can't honor treaties, how can we expect other countries to honor theirs?

Yes we are hypocrites... and even though I love this great country look at the leadership we had the last 8 years it has brought the US to an all new low.

Can we keep this from becoming a clinton-bashing thread? I posed a legitimate question regarding foreign policy

PennState, another rare moment in history, I agree with you... The US is being extremely hypocritical in it's stance. After all, wasn't it the US that gave Saddam all his weapons? Didn't the US trade arms to Iran in the Iran-Contra affair? And now they have the nerve to tell the Russians not to sell arms to Iran?

Putin is absolutely right to tell the US to take a hike and do what he needs to do to get his country back on track economically. Somehow the US has this weird notion that it's the only country in the world that should be allowed to spend billions on weapons and have advanced armies. Sheer arrogance.....

tagej,

US is not a terrorist country. Iran is. But I guess you're too young to remember 1979 when Iran was holding all those hostages, and why.

Oh well.

If a country is advanced enough "themselves" to develope weapons and armies, More power to them... Iran is NOT. They are a bunch of crazies that can't be trusted...

You're argument is lame.

It's like saying, if a Gun company was doing Very badly, it would be OK to sell their Guns to Criminals just to get the company back on their feet.

Get real.

BTW, no, the US did not give Saddam his weapons... I remember him using SCUD's in the gulf war. Hmmm... WHo made SCUD missles? MIG fighter airplanes? hmmmm... more US hardware? No.

I think the Iran has a very good reason to aquire arms... Anyone living next to Iraq just might feel a bit unconfident. About the Russians selling them, if it weren't the russians it would be someone else... the States? Perhaps, at least I could think it as a part of the US/UK anti-Iraq -program. Purely defensive weapons(anti-aircraft, vehicle mines, anti-tank rockets) I think are acceptable under the circumstances. Just wondering what kind of control do the russians have in mind to prevent any offensive weapons(in commercial point of view, the expensive ones) to be exported as well? In Russia, it's the few big guys who get the money while common people live in misery. It's really easier to establish the trade contacts legitimately and openly and then smuggle the real hardware in the background and get the cash. That's just how things work in Russia right now. Been there, seen it.

The underlying question is how is foreign policy going to work if we don't keep our end of the bargain?

Whitedog, during the Iran-Iraq war, the soviets supplied weapons to Iran and the Americans supplied weapons to Iraq.
