But why...

What is Viktor Medvedchuk to Putin such that he is willing to risk the wrath of the rabid war commentators of Russia who had been baying for Azov blood? I didn't understand. And then it clicked.

Medvedchuk is part of Putin's inner circle. And getting him back to Russia at such a high price is a signal to the rest of his inner circle that he will take care of them, as long as they stand with him.

He is safe guarding his flanks.
You do know Putin is godfather of Medvedchuk’s daughter, right? They’re very close personally.

Looks like Russia is going to implode soon. People enjoyed watching war show on television, but really don't want to be teleported into it.
Also, economy will probably collapse because men will go into hiding and avoid going to work to avoid a conscription summons.

Rival Tsar with his own private army. Best case is that this turns into a full on civil war, with RF army fighting Wagner for power. Worst case is that this prick takes power "cleanly", and escalates the war crimes in Ukraine.
Yeah, all those wishing for Putin to be deposed, be careful what you wish for - high likelihood that anyone replacing him will be more extreme (there is far more pressure on Putin from folks further on fascist-ultra nationalist right in Russia, than from any anti-war sentiment)

With all the bold talk on 300K more soldiers do not matter, if they are in trenches and not attacking, they make it much harder to recapture territory. In both Kherson and the fortified areas of Donbas (Lyman, etc), the advance by Ukraine stalled out. Progress is being made, but if gets harder and harder to take territory and losses to do so goes up as well.

Fall rains and then winter will stall it more which gives more time for Russia to dig in.

Maybe it will all break through, but time means harder and harder to get the Russians out.

When Ukraine finally takes Kherson, it will be after mowing through the bulk of Russia's armed forces.
It would be the effective end of the original Russian invasion army.

Russia is not mobilizing because Ukraine is stalled out.
It just takes that long to destroy Russia's main host. But both sides on the ground know who is winning.
Kherson is on the wrong side of a large river for Russia to ever win that contest.

In Lyman Ukraine is already bypassing the fortified areas around the city and then encircle and moving to cut-off the Russian units. No reason to attack into the enemies defensives when you can maneuver around and encircle when you can.

Kherson front appears to me more and more a situation that the Ukraine is pressing just hard enough to keep a large number of Russian defensive forces tied up in the city while they make it very difficult to re-supply those force. If Russia was smart they would withdraw across the river and let Ukraine have Kherson so they can redeploy some of the forces in Kherson to other areas of the fighting.

Russia's goal is to steal as much land as is humanly possible.
As such, Kherson is strategically vital for their push across the Black Sea coast and to threaten central and western Ukraine.

Ukraine knows that to which is why they are pushing just hard enough to keep Russian forces pinned down in Kherson while they slowly tighten the screws on the supply lines for those Russian forces.

This partial mobilization to bring up 300K reservists will include this proviso:

“We are preparing proposals for new citizens of the Russian Federation who have Russian citizenship for less than 10 years to do compulsory military service for a year for people from Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan,” council member Kirill Kabanov wrote on Telegram Thursday.

“Refusal to perform military duty should entail the deprivation of Russian citizenship not only for a person liable for military service, but also for members of his family,” he added.

Welcome to Russia. Now go die in a hail of gunfire.

Guessing morale will be very poor among these new troops. Not like it was great before.

No one wants a full mobilization, as the mass of untrained and poorly equipped soldiers will suffer mass casualties. But there are plenty of people in the country who have combat experience or suitable training, but do not want to participate in the war. If hostilities begin on Russian territory, including the newly annexed territories, it will be impossible for them to evade conscription on legal and moral grounds.

Have you received your papers to report yet?

The alternative is a world war then it won't be "little more than a proxy war." But I admit I see your point, it didn't cross my mind the audience would be sitting on sand and forming pearls in their cooches. I should have accounted for many here getting their cycles synchronized -- it is P&N, after all.
You should get the fuck out of this thread.

Oh, look, the Bezos owned left leaning newspaper is saying doom and gloom if those evil R people get power. Even though support has been a strong bipartisan vote and most questions are on tracking/accountability and many are calling for more aid. Almost zero want to cut aid.
I would not trust an R controlled congress to not fuck this up.

They don’t get the guns until they’ve cleared the border! :)

Biden missed a great opportunity to make the case for removing Russia’s seat on the Permanent/Security Council at the UN.
Zelenskyy made the point forcefully to the UN via video, saw that on ABC network news last night.

Reminds me of my dad and the Vietnam war. He got a job offer out of college working for a Naval contractor as a nuclear engineer doing classified work on sub and aircraft carrier reactors.

At that time students weren’t drafted and as a navy contractor he wouldn’t be drafted. However in the 3 weeks he took off after graduating and before his job started he was drafted. His draft board refused to let him stay for the job even after his job made the request.

My dad ended up not being drafted but only because he failed the physical due to a screwed up elbow he had after he broke his arm as a kid and they didn’t set it right.
