The initial Russian push at least from the north and the east has looked underpowered for whatever reason. Maybe they expected little to no resistance.

They're hustling more stuff up now. The final outcome still really isn't in doubt but the Ukranians can make it cost.

And that's the hope. If the Ukrainians can make it last and make it hurt Russians then unrest will grow back in Russia against the war and against Putin. It's the longest of shots, but without direct boots on the ground from the west (which I am not for) there's no other way out for them.

Or, until someone does something incredibly stupid like this:

EDIT: Also a nonzero (and increasing rapidly) chance the sarcophagus at Chernobyl got damaged. Read through the thread, seeing several radiation spikes in the area.

I missed this yesterday too

There's actually some real, internal backlash going on in Russia it seems.
Hard to keep a regime oppressed in the information age I guess.

Russian Ministry of Defense wants to conceal any proof of negative outcomes from its own people. This likely includes most bodies going home.
If I’m not mistaken similar coverups have happened with the invasion of eastern Ukraine over the last 8 years.

"To stop the advance of the tank column, the decision was to blow up the Henichesk bridge. The engineer Skakun Vitaliy volunteered to perform this task. He mined the brdige but couldn't leave and blew it up together with himself." The unit successfully redeployed - Land Forces

Just continuing the long and storied tradition of Russians disappearing for no official reason and then being subsequently erased.

Ukraine says Day 2 produced a thousand dead Russians. Those crematoriums are going to be busy.

Yes. This is now SOP for them even though the scale is likely to be quite a bit larger.

I get the impression that he intends to die in defense of his nation rather than be subject to some Russian show trial that would end with the same result.
I'm thinking back to that phone call when Trump tried to blackmail Zelensky by holding up aid.

Yet, people still support that dirtbag, Trump. Compare leadership. It isn't even close.

But they'll just ignore the order. And what are they to do when they violate it? Shoot commercial planes down?
