Great they are holding back the surge. But Putin may just get pushed to the point. Screw the infrastructure. Just blown everything up
Agree, that is real risk. So far have avoided indiscriminate bombing of cities and largely avoided critical infrastructure, trying to keep the pretend image of being the good guy forced to fight this "defensive" war due to machinations of the evil West.

But widespread civilian casualties would break any such illusion for his domestic audience. There is a lot of shared heritage (and blood ties) between many Ukrainians and Russians also, making any such tactics potentially risky for Putin.

Whatever happens from here on out it appears at least for now this is not going how Russia hoped. Kudos to Ukraine for putting up a stout defense and kudos to Biden for outmaneuvering Putin.

I wonder how many on Putin’s kill list (which we shared with Ukraine) have made it out to Poland within the first 24 hours.

I also wonder how many FSB agents have blended in with Ukrainians fleeing across the border.

Never in my life I thought I would see myself cheering on a foreign country in a war fighting for their survival like I would if I were watching my sports team. Go Ukraine!

Interestingly enough ... According to the NYT’s live blog, there’s serious resistance happening around Chernobyl:

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s interior ministry announced Thursday that Russian troops had pushed from Belarus, north of Ukraine, into the highly radioactive Chernobyl exclusion zone, touching off a battle that risked damaging the cement-encased nuclear reactor that melted down in 1986.

“National Guard troops responsible for protecting the storage unit for dangerous radioactive waste are putting up fierce resistance,” said Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the interior minister. Should an artillery shell hit the storage unit, Mr. Herashchenko said, “radioactive dust could cover the territory of Ukraine, Belarus and the countries of the European Union.”

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Twitter that Russian forces were trying to seize Chernobyl, the site of the worst nuclear accident in history. The site is now inside a protective zone covering about 1,000 square miles, including part of the shortest direct route from Belarus to Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. “This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe,” Mr. Zelensky said.

The shortest route to Kyiv from Belarus is through the Chernobyl area, it may not be much more than that. Definitely something to keep an eye on.

I wonder if there is enough back pressure in Russia to overthrow Putin over this.
It looks to be wildly unpopular not only in the civilian population but also his top brass.

Could someone put a cap in his ass and be done with it?

10%? Common, at least give me 10.

Lets not forget fucking Belarus when all this is said and done.
Fucking Lukasjenko, little bitch.

Ukraine is not member of NATO. There are no treaty obligations.
Fully aware of that. Do it under the premise of mutual defensive exercises for a potential NATO member. As long as there were enough NATO troops there, it is almost certain Putin would not have done shit

What they're doing IS special because they're risking their own livelihoods.

I don't know what the status of these 9 reactors is; but as I understand it, once you begin decommissioning a nuclear power plant, there is no rollback. But you're right, extending the service life of the remaining 3 is a no-brainer.

California is facing the same problem as well, as we're apparently rushing to decommission the Diablo Canyon Power Plant:

Yes, I live in CA, and I'm well aware of it. I've always opposed it. It does no good to develop all this solar and wind to the point where it's about 15% of our grid, then shut down another 15% worth of nuclear reactors. It leaves us in the same place with fossil fuels. If we're going to get off fossil fuels, all options must be on the table, and even if we don't want to commission more reactors, we should at least keep the ones we already have.

The opposition to nuclear power has never been a very fact based position. Not unless you are very selective about the facts. The US nuclear power industry is heavily regulated by the NRC and has an excellent safety record. In 70 years, we've had one accident which was 2 orders of magnitude less serous than either Chernobyl or Fukushima. They think maybe 20 people died in a local cancer cluster from Three Mile Island. How many people have died from inhalation of fossil fuel exhaust? I think the answer is about a million times that many.

Yet even if we look at it worldwide and include Chernobyl and Fukushima, it still isn't even close. I think some people just associated nuclear power with nuclear weapons in their minds, and hence why the opposition to it is more emotional than rational.

How come many countries in Europe did not joined NATO when they had the Chance? I mean it's a no-brainer.

Interesting that the US is openly flying 4 KC-135 (stratotankers) over Poland and Romania, not overly far from the Ukrainian border. Although whatever they are being used for isn't visible on flightradar24. As a guess, probably helping keep a number of NATO fighters on more extended combat air patrols to keep forces from wandering into NATO land.

US expects Ukraine to fall within 96 hours.

US and Europe won’t cut Russian off from SWIFT yet. Will they when Russia finishes taking over Ukraine. Russia should now be treated like North Korea.
