The Russian power elite that help keep Putin in power don't want to die for his pet war. They will never let it happen.
None of them will die, they will Bunker Down with Putin, let their population die on the ensuing Nuclear Holocaust

UK announcing sanctions on all Russian banks and sovereign debt transactions.
Aeroflot banned from UK.
Tech export ban.
Some more oligarchs sanctioned.

Being one of the people left alive in a nuclear wasteland is probably not nearly as fun as being a billionaire, sailing your mega-yacht around the world so I think they would probably pick the latter.

Putin is not all powerful within Russia. Same goes for Kim Jong Un, Xi, or any other autocrat. All of them, without exception, are in that spot because they command the loyalty of key figures in the country. So yeah, they might be just fine with Putin in power now but if he starts talking about launching nukes at the west that calculus changes very, very fast.

Yeah, good luck with trying to use currency in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Rich vs poor isn't even a thing anymore if we're all hunkered down in a bunker.

So what you are saying is that they would rather Kill Putin on the Spot before he turns Russia into a Nuclear Wasteland?

I believe the reason for Russians seizing the Chernobyl power plant area is to attempt to flank UA forces defending the bridge over the Pripyat river and open a path down the west side of the Dneiper to Kyiv.

RU have an airhead at the airport outside Kyiv (east) where heavy fighting is reported.

Overall, it seems RU forces are having more difficulty on the ground than I anticipated. RU does have air superiority at will. Does not change assessment nor am I seeing any notable changes in OSINT sources and their overall assessment

Yes, I think if Putin attempted to launch against the west absent some existential threat to Russia, and being banned from swift does not qualify, he would be overthrown. Maybe they would just lock him up but either way taken out.

Watching a lot of Fox this morning. They are being exceptionally objective. Of course, this is daytime Fox. At one point, the bimbos and the general had this strange discussion about how some people's opinion about Putin might have been wrong i.e. he very clever and is doing circles around Biden. I wonder where they got the idea from?

No irony the Russians taking over one of the things that led to the downfall of the USSR.

Maybe they should run a shutdown test while they are there.

Not sure what you mean, China would want nothing less than Taiwan and the entire Asian Pacific region before they oppose Russia in any meaningful way.

Right, there is no feasible deal with China here. One of my biggest concerns about Putin getting away with this is it may well embolden China to invade Taiwan, and not in the far future, but in this decade. The main thing putting the brakes on that is China's concern over the economic consequences. Which is exactly why any sanctions we put on Russia need to be maximally effective. Russia needs to be economically excluded as a rogue state like North Korea. And the EU needs to accelerate solar and wind, now.

Biden is going to announce the sanctions today. Let's hope they are more than symbolic gestures.
