I'm starting to wonder of the possibility that US intelligence may have purposely lied on how "easy" it was going to be for Putin to take Ukraine. Because for sure that would have stroked Putin's ego hard, as he likely would have believed it since they were spot on about everything else leading up to invasion. If that's the case we could be seeing the greatest lure/trap in the history of humanity. On the flip side if this is the case, I also hate how many lives are being lost.
The thing is, it should have been fairly easy to roll into Ukraine. Russia is a nuclear armed state, supposedly one of the greatest military mights in the world, rolling into a country about the size of NY and Penn combined. They soft-walked the start, enough to let Ukraine get momentum on the defense, and stiff-armed them several times. If Russia had just sent in 80% of their forces from 5 directions at once, this probably would have been over in 48h.

Oh wow...

A translation later on in the thread: "Soldiers say they are out of gas. Driver offers to tow them back to russia. Everyone laughs. Russian soldiers ask for news on how they are doing in war. Driver tell them that Ukraine is winning, russians are surrendering and impliest that they should too."

This is the whole problem Putin faces - logistics. Even if Ukrainian gov't concedes, how do they expect to hold a country that large and with 44M hardnosed people? Putin would have to deploy a huge occupational force for a LONG time. It makes no logistical sense.

If Italy on board, basically down to just the Germans… pressure is on. Also Russia tried to bribe Hungary with cheap gas, but they won’t block SWIFT sanctions alone.

Germans already explicitly said they'd do it I think. Hungary just issued a statement that they're on board.

I don't know what to think about this. Part of me wonders if the US is using Ukraine as a cautionary tale of not joining NATO. "You can chill with us, but you're not really with us." But Ukranians have some huge fn'ing Balls. Much respect for their people.

Why does everyone keep mentioning that Russia is a nuclear armed country?

Big deal.

Putin wants Ukraine intact. A nuclear destroyed nation does him no good. Russia can bomb as many Ukrainian cities as it wants, although there will be some casualties if its aircraft are shot down.

However, Putin wants to take over a Ukraine that still has functioning industries, a working transportation system and sustainable agriculture producers.

Nuclear devastation would certainly damage that scenario,

Putin may be able to give others pause because of its nuclear arsenal. But he needs to understand the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction.

The only reason they are considered one of the greatest military mights in the world is because of the number of nuclear weapons they have. Nuclear weapons does not equal a great trained military.

Hell yea, get this done yesterday
SWIFT cutoff - This will cut off a lot of Russia cash - including revenue from gas sales to Europe. No reason to keep shipping gas if they aren’t being paid. Also will stop debt repayments by Russian firms, and likely lots of unforeseen issues. Will make Russia extremely dependent on China (and lesser extent India) for trade.

Because Putin is behaving super irrational right now. How he will react to SWIFT and the backlash at home and Russians abroad, increased NATO presence at borders, Ukraine i invasion dragging out and even then realizing that occupation is gonna be impossible… The Vlad might look at a first strike nuclear offensive as a chance he has to take. Also. How many subs outside US coastline right now? Cause he IS gonna go for the head of the snake.

Dude is running a one man show and he is fucked in the head AND HE SINGLE-HANDEDLY controls about 6K nuclear ballistic missiles.

One man.

I wonder why the west has come up with this idea of separation of powers, checks and balances? Gosh… could it be in part to prevent something like this?

This is not actually how Russia works. As I said before if Putin tried to order a first strike on the west over something like this he would be overthrown and/or killed.

People often think that dictators are all powerful in their countries but this is wrong. They rely on support from key power players to stay on the throne.
