Italy seems less hesitant. Germany doesn't want to lose heating and oil. Cyprus has a deep financial interest in Oligarch money.
As someone with some roots in Cyprus, it's embarrassing. Many Cypriots think it's a disgusting position. Probably most do.. they aren't a fan of Russians taking over so much of the island financial interest wise anyways. So they have no love for the Russians. If any group of people know to sympathize with a people being invaded by a much powerful neighbor it's the Cypriots. It's the corrupt government and the wealthy involved with the Russians that are the shitheads.

They better get around to it fast.
I read the German foreign minister or someone of that status said today they are leaning towards it.

It's looking a bit like Putin may have miscalculated here more than a little. Time will tell. The Biden administration did well telegraphing excellent US Intel about the Russians intent to the world and our allies, marketing the support for action, non military, but action, and also bad PR for Putin.

When the biggest Spy Network in the world say that something is about to happen. You better believe it.

Get on with it already. What are the repercussions?
I think the real issue with sanctioning Putin is that officially Putin is poor. His friends/family hold the wealth and then let him stay in their mansions, eat their fancy food, etc. You don't need wealth or money if everything you want is free.

So there is not really anything to sanction from Putin directly. Of course, behind the scenes he has probably $100B of wealth. But since it isn't in his name, sanctioning Putin directly isn't how you get to Putin's wealth. To harm Putin, you have to sanction the friends/family that have Putin's wealth in their names.

A lot of Putin's wealth is stealth ownership of Gazprom. Hurt Gazprom and you hurt Putin. That is the easiest path.

Yea a lot depends on how the sanctions are structured. If it's just them by name it is just an embarrassment. If its their families and entities they interact with it could be disastrous.

What did he miscalculate?

It is starting to sound like the Russians are suffering more losses (troops and vehicles) than he could have possibly thought. Of course the Ukrainian numbers are inflated, but even with that, it does not sound like it's going easy. Sounds like the Russians are not taking over enough crucial points as fast as they should being such a bigger power. Even some supply line issues are coming out. More protests in Russia than anticipated. He might have even thought they'd have surrendered by now. This just may take a lot more than he thought, and that is a miscalculation.

Heaven forbid they be briefly inconvenienced. Fucking cowards (their leadership, not the people).
Geez, the Germans already hit the stop button on NS 2. Plus, they will be hosed if Russia cuts all their NG imports. Give them a beat. It’s going to much more difficult on them than us.

All this doesnt make sense right, why is Putin doing this, objective etc, and why he has underestimated the Ukranians resolve.
But what if Putin has surrounded himself with enough yes-men over the years, so that he REALLY do believe that the Ukrainian people would welcome savior Putin to rid them of the neonazi nato like infestation that has taken over their country.
That is the only thing that can make this make a little sense… Putin is delusional, he is not reading the context right… And no advisors to really set him straight.
Must be.

Finnish rifles are like Swiss rifles. They're used too much to accumulate dust.

doesn't matter. Russia attacking Finland is a hilarious idea.

All Finland has to do is dig up the corpse of Simo Haya, prop him on the border, and watch every single Russian flee in terror when they see his bones, probably killing half of their own forces in the clumsy retreat.

India avoids condemning Russian invasion of Ukraine, stays away from Biden’s coalition
WAPO today

Boycott all companies using Indian call centers and engineering centers. They are a security risk.

Disappointing, but somewhat understandable given their special relationship with Russia.

This should have been the time for India to re-align a bit. Solidarity with other democracies strikes me as a better play than sucking up to your bully's bitch.
