It would seem that what is really required to secure freedom and individual rights is the rule of law, with laws specifically created for the purpose securing freedom and rights, and of limiting the power of govt and its leaders from infringing them.
With no one above the Law, including corporations.

Interesting how Russia had authoritarianism under communism and now authoritarianism under capitalism. Seems like the economic system isn't the common denominator.
I've read it in several quite old (pre-1965) works of Russian literature where the author contends (whether rightly or wrongly) a "strong-man" is required to rule Russia. Maybe they were right...or it could be that people of a certain dictatorial disposition like living in Russia...? :D

Seems like Trump was setting the stage for this during his shared press conference today in the hearts and minds of his comradley base. Then when he was disparaging McCain and said the country missed out on the great Republican health care option I almost spit my lunch out onto my keyboard. He just has the most punchable squeeky little mouth, it reminds me of a porn stars bleached butt hole.

Try it here, Donnie. Just try it.

He will. If given half a chance, he will. His entire base is being groomed for this. They have been for a decade or more.

Look at the YouTube libertarian, conservative, conspiracy and anarcho-capitalist cults of personalities. Virtually ALL of them are idealizing strong men and grooming their listeners for authoritarianism as a way to achieve ethno-nationalism and save their "culture."

Stefan Molyneux just went to Poland and spent hours on YouTube praising their ethno-nationalist authoritarian state.

His base would stand behind it 100%.

Which means we need to limit the accumulation & power of wealth, obviously. Reaganomics won't accomplish that.

China as well, although Russia is bordering on a capitalist/kleptocratic model at this point.

I've seen some his videos in the past, but I forgotten about what ideas he promotes.

they also had it under the czar. I guess they're uncomfortable unless there's someone telling them what to do.

this is, after all, the home of Ivan the Terrible.

This happend within a couple of hours of Trump calling him. Coincidence? But what a load, russia is heading even further into the shithole.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new law which will allow the punishment of individuals and online media for spreading what Russia calls "fake news" and information which "disrespects" the state.

The new rules allow prosecutors to direct complaints about material considered insulting to Russian officials to the government, which can then block websites publishing the information. Publications that repeatedly spread "unreliable"information which undermines social order, may face fines of up to $23,000, and repeat offenders could spend time in jail, according to The Washington Post.

The laws will target online information that presents "clear disrespect for society, government, state symbols, the constitution and government institutions.""

More @ NPR

I guess the government is worried that its assassination workflow won't be quick enough to take out all its critics in a timely manner?
