Unless you're prepared to get burned.

Lots of interesting news from Georgia over the last few days. We know Russia and Georgia agreed to a cease-fire, and that the US/Georgia and some European countries have called for a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian soil (even from the disputed territories). So what is ACTUALLY happening?

Russia captures Georgian troops, confiscates US Humvees

Russian troops dig in, fortify outposts despite agreeing to withdraw

Russia destroys key railway bridge after cease-fire

And then of course, there is the sabre-rattling:

Medvedev: Cross us and we will crush you

A member of the Russian government was even quoted as saying that they do not have a timeline for withdrawal from Southern Ossetia for the same reasons the US does not have a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq.

And old news (although it might be new to some of you) is that Russia will be re-arming their Baltic fleet with nuclear weapons in response to the US/Poland missile "defense" pact. There are even unconfirmed reports of negotiations for military installations in Cuba.

Part of me thinks the US conspired or used Georgia as a tool to get other European countries on the same page about expanding our military presence in that theater. It worked very well with Poland. But is all this escalation really worth it?

Look asshole, nobodies happy about the predicament our asshole president put us in with his bullshit Foreign Policy but it really annoys the hell out of me that you gloat over it. This is some serious shit and a good reason not to have another Bush clone as President but know this, the situation in Georgia with the Russians is going to be a thorn in the side of whoever we elect for President and will not be good for America.

I hope they end this shit soon. George Bush fucked up America's strength big time but the last thing we need is all the freaks of the world feeling emboldened.

Do you sleep well at night, or does your hatred of America keep you up? Seriously, it's pathetic.

I doubt he hates America. Just a bit of gloating at where America has ended up after eight years of aggression by a stupid president.

I don't know. If you read enough of his posts, they aren't anti George Bush/republican. They come off as pro-whoever-we-are-currently-against. Big difference there. He posted in another thread that he hoped Russia would retaliate to us setting up in Poland. Got your wish asshole, EVERYONE knows that the cold war was great for the world, let's hope it comes back full-fledged just so it makes a politician jpeyton doesn't like look bad!!!

Either A) he's a moron with terrible priorities or B) he hates America.

After years of being derided as pussies, appeasers, and other stupid names for calling our aggressive foreign policy short-sighted and brutish, you can't blame some people for gloating at where we are. Face it, America is in a terrible position and the "I told you so" people are having their moments.

Russia's driving home a point - the sensibilities of the world community mean jack squat to them if they decide they want to do something. They'll stay as long as they want and sidle out when everyone has given up trying to exert pressure upon them. The bear is back.

Yea...and when that nuke goes off, I hope it's right in the backyard of those "I told you so" people. See how well they gloat from inside a mushroom cloud, since they were so happy that it became a possibility.

Now that's probably not going to happen, but you get the idea. Why would ANYONE be happy about an elevated risk of conflict with Russia? You can be happy you were right, but being happy at elevated risk to America....yea, that's just stupid. Your pride isn't worth THAT much.

Good catch; SS-21s can carry nukes, although I doubt they are equipped with them currently.

Any comments on the situation, or just the same old "OMG y do u hatez Amerukah?!?"

Yes, I guess am gloating a bit. If Russia didn't respond like it had, it would have affirmed the hawkish, expansionist, imperialistic policies of Bush/McCain and their allies.

We need a reality check. Too many people in this country are acting like a teenager who just got their driver's license, speeding down the highway at 100MPH like they're invincible and the only people on the road that matter. Humble pie needs to be dished out.

We have this magical thing called an "election" coming up. Believe it or not....in less than six months, we could have a president that won't provoke Russia, and we won't need to eat our "humble pie". Again, though, since you want that "humble pie" so much, I hope they deliver it straight to your doorstep.

No doubt undecided voters are watching this entire conflict unfold, witnessing the foreign policy blunders of Bush/McCain, and will vote in November to ensure it doesn't happen again.

If that was true, Bush wouldn't have been elected for 2nd term but voters aren't that intelligent or interested in global affairs and their effects on US.

People have been citing Kosovo as precedent for Russia's actions. Which president was in office then?

I think we're on a fundamentally different page here. I think Russia's actions are good. The two breakaway regions of Georgia are inviting Russian troops to protect them from Georgian aggression.

Russia engineered a conflict to expand their power in the region. The Georgians unfortunately took the bait.

So you also hate America because you wish a nuke would go off here. Traitor.

See how this works?

I knew one of you kids would try that.

He wants it to happen. I don't want it to happen. However, if he wants it to happen, and he gets his wish, we'll see how much he likes it when it affects more than his precious pride.

I'm just giving him an opportunity to reevaulate his pathetic views, that's all. Don't you have a tax to be bitching about?

Do you work as a news reporter ?
You sound so much like the media always concentrating on dollars and politics and playing soldier like you have a clue. I live near multiple major military bases and every day I get to see the casualty list in the papers. I get to see the families first hand, not what the media portrays or as some statistic.

Your attitude about the current conflict in Georgia like it is some video game makes me nauseated and angry. Why don't you look in the faces of the mothers that lost their children and see if they think you should be gloating. War is not something to ever look at like its a fun topic you seem to think it is. A reality check will never come from people like you. You are too stuck in your own personal fantasy world to comprehend the damage that war does.

JP is a perfect example of the 'blame America first' crowd.

Instead of protesting the war he instead runs around gloating about it. He has obviously proven that he is truly not anti-war.

If Russia was only interested in protecting those break away regions they would have stopped their advance their. But they seem more intent on intimidating Georgia and other former republics via a show of force. I just hope that Europe realizes that if they want to prevent the return of the cold war that they should push the boarders of NATO as close to Russia as possible.

This is what you get for trying to help a country like Russia, which apparently has no wish to be a real part of the world community. Post-cold war, the US and our NATO allies were very ready to welcome a newly democratic Russia into the world community as a friend and ally rather than an adversary, and that desire for peace and cooperation manifested itself in terms of aid and increased diplomatic recognition. Instead of responding to that, Russia has decided it wants to go back to the days of being a complete failure at ruling the world. They're high if they think their going to regain their superpower status, that seems reserved for the US and possibly China for the foreseeable future, but they could sure make a lot of noise being the whiny wannabe world power they are.

The lesson seems clear here...after the cold war ended, we should have done everything we could to grind Russia into the ground and made sure they stayed there. They certainly weren't our worst enemy, but there is something wrong with Russia that does not seem shared by any other of our former adversaries. They just can't handle peace, cooperation, or democracy. We nuked Japan and firebombed Germany during WWII, and now they are some of our best allies and trading partners. Russia just can't seem to get over its glory days, despite the fact that they were not, IMO, all that glorious.
