Unless you're prepared to get burned.
Lots of interesting news from Georgia over the last few days. We know Russia and Georgia agreed to a cease-fire, and that the US/Georgia and some European countries have called for a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgian soil (even from the disputed territories). So what is ACTUALLY happening?
Russia captures Georgian troops, confiscates US Humvees
Russian troops dig in, fortify outposts despite agreeing to withdraw
Russia destroys key railway bridge after cease-fire
And then of course, there is the sabre-rattling:
Medvedev: Cross us and we will crush you
A member of the Russian government was even quoted as saying that they do not have a timeline for withdrawal from Southern Ossetia for the same reasons the US does not have a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq.
And old news (although it might be new to some of you) is that Russia will be re-arming their Baltic fleet with nuclear weapons in response to the US/Poland missile "defense" pact. There are even unconfirmed reports of negotiations for military installations in Cuba.
Part of me thinks the US conspired or used Georgia as a tool to get other European countries on the same page about expanding our military presence in that theater. It worked very well with Poland. But is all this escalation really worth it?
