Russia bombers to probe
U.S. defenses

Russian strategic bombers were
deployed recently to a Far Eastern
airfield and are expected to test
U.S. air defenses during large-scale
nuclear exercises this week,
according to U.S. intelligence
officials.
The strategic war games began
Monday with flights of long-range
Tu-160 Blackjack and Tu-95 Bear H
bombers, along with Tu-22
medium-range maritime bombers.
The exercises are expected to be
larger than nuclear strike exercises
held in December.
The Blackjacks were moved
recently to Andyr air base in the
Russian arctic. The bombers are
expected to fly routes over the polar
icecap toward Canada to test out
the North American Aerospace
Defense Command warning system,
known as NORAD.

For some reason... I trust Russia more than I trust the crazy liberal parts of Europe that get mad every time the US makes a move. Russia seems to respect us.

I knew a Russian guy once . . . save for the accent, he acted a lot like a friend of mine from Texas. ;) They have the same sort of attitude.

Russia has to do somthing with their military... why not send over a few dozen 1950's era bombers that can be chased down by a spitfire to see if our radar installations dont have controllers asleep at the console with a dunkin donut in their hand and a maxim mag in the other.

Dont worry, Russia isnt a threat... they just like to know what new stuff might be implemented and if NORAD reacts differently.

The militery exercise was canceled, it was supposed to start on monday but because of the reactions from the icelandic government I think it was delayed. Iceland controls airspace in the north atlantic ocean and a 2 day notice was a little to little to do any devert comercial air flight away from the area that they were going to be in. All flight was going to be canceled.

Might have started today though.

<< Russian bombers and submarines routinely probe our shores, it's a good thing. >>

Yep, sure is...

Russia and other major powers are welcome to come over and see our stuff any time they like...

Open information is a good thing, generally leads to world peace...

I've got nothing to hide, does anyone else?

Russians are cool.
The cold war is a thing of the past.
I would not be surprised if they offered to help us with Afghanistan

The Russians are funding the rebels that launched those attacks Tuesday night. They are unfortunately ill-equipped to fight the Taliban in a direct invasion. Their satellite network consists of only a couple of recently launched spy satellites. Hardly what is required to do any sort of direct operations.

Actually the Tu-160 blackjack is their newest and best bomber....it looks like a B-1 bomber that is the size of a B-52...very good plane

i'm not worried, i'm glad to see we're working together, they could be a very important ally in the coming months...

Just normal war games. It only shows us that relations are good enough between our 2 nations that we trust eachother. That is, of couse, a very good thing in a time like this.

The Russians had scrapped 24 of the 30 Tu-160's by 1999 in order to have parts to run just 6 of them. I highly doubt that any are still on alert.
