Insecurity is showing.

The Guardian said:
A picture depicting Vladimir Putin in full makeup has been banned in Russia.

The picture is cited on the Russian justice ministry’s list of banned “extremist” materials – a list that is 4,074 entries long. No 4,071 states that the poster, depicting Putin with painted eyes and lips, implies “the supposed nonstandard sexual orientation of the president of the Russian Federation”.

It’s unclear exactly which image the ministry is talking about – but it is believed to be similar to one used on signs during protests against Russia’s anti-gay laws. It turns out there are quite a lot of photoshopped images in circulation that depict Putin in drag.

Oh, dear. I suppose I should just be thanking my lucky stars whoever did that photoshop-job didn't use one of VP's frequent topless photos (or better yet, topless on horseback), or that it's not the classic over-the-shoulder-hair-flip pose, but nonetheless, thank you so very much for posting this. I am never gonna be able un-see that...

(In all seriousness though, he doesn't look any worse in that photo than he normally does. Whoever did the photoshopping did an excellent job!:p)

Hell I like him rendered that way. He looks puppy dog harmless and cuddly. I bet if good 'ol Leo da Vinci was around he'd have picked Putin to model for him fer sure instead of that creepy Lisa Gherardini with that weird looking smirk on her face. ;)

"Flattering Imagery"

I would think "unflattering" a more appropriate term.

Eh, as I mentioned before, it seems pretty "flattery neutral" to me, though given his (at least publicly) virulently anti-everything-but-missionary-position views, presumably he isn't pleased.... But he's not exactly a candidate for "Handsomest Man of the Year" in the best of circumstances, and that photoshop job really is quite well done, given what the artist had to work with, of course...<eg>

In my experience, the hardcore "anything but m/f missionary is ub de DEBBIL!!!!111one" types are usually closeted and self-loathing. It's practically a law of physics in the US, and while I'm not sure it holds in Russia, some things are pretty well human universals.

Sometimes that happens, and and I think it has been more common at other times and in other places, but (in my own fairly extensive experience,) I think that's a bit of a "pat" overgeneralization. But in any event, as far as Putin is concerned, that's why I said "publicly". I - and I daresay very few "ordinary mortals" - have any idea what Putin's truly personal views are about anything - he's such an incredibly political creature - so I see no point in trying to pop-psychologize him. ("Analyze him politically" sure, but that's a different matter.) Except maybe that given his "career path" and the sort of personality it usually takes to get where he's gotten, the way he's gotten there, I'd be somewhat surprised if he actually has any strong "personal views" other than a probably inflated sense of self-worth and an overriding desire for power, of course.<lol> Not that I say this to excuse him, of course, but I have no doubt his public positions on sexual orientation and whatnot are purely about politics (starting, but by no means ending, with his, ahem, unholy political alliance with the Russian Orthodox Church...) My very strong suspicion is that if he finds someone "useful", he truly couldn't possibly care less what they do sexually, with whom, where, when, and/or how...
