Anyone else think that this movie was only 75% of what it should have been?

It had so much potential but it jas even more disjointed than the royal tenenabaums...the tenenbaums was a great movie thouhg because the scenes served as well positioned elements, where in this movie it was jsut missplaced

It had so many great scenes but the whole story line was jsut messy.

interestignly enough I still enjoyed it:D

IMO, all of his movies have "messy" story lines. The whimsical nature of his movies are part of the appeal.

I loved Rushmore. One of my favorite movies.

I guess....it's just that there was so much more that could've been done with it.....

Sound track on Rushmore is second to none.

Like what, make it like every other worthless movie out there?

Seriously, do you have any specific references? What was out of place?

Story didn't seem disjointed or messy to me. Rushmore is a great movie. One of my faves.

The speech in the beginning is a classic.

"Get them in your sights and take them down." :D

Rushmore is a fantastic movie, everything about it. The Royal Tennenbaums was a bit flawed.. And then The Life Aquatic had a lot of flaws...

I'm hoping The Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson's next movie) takes away some of the layers he put on his last couple movies and just makes it a fun one again like Bottle Rocket and Rushmore.

For example, at the beginning, the Blume's relationship with the teacher seemed to have no point. One can see why it happened, but the connection was too vague.

I like dthe film...it's just that at moments it went out of chracter, turning sappy and emotional, like when the kid went out on stage and time slowed. Sure there was direct correlation with his previous daydream, but it wasn't as strong as it couldn't have been.

Definitely a keeper.....but like many of my favorite movies, they are favorites because they speak to me, and when they speak my language, I don't hesitate to ponder what my contribution to such a film would be.

I did a report for flim class on anderson. I love his movies...They are just so fun to watch. Lots of cool designs, characters, dry humor, and colors.

Soundtrack is great too.

The end of Life Aquatic is great

Anderson needs to get Owen Wilson back to help write the scripts.

As you can read above, Anderson will not be calling me for help.

Highly overrated movie. But not as overrated as the royal tenenbaums. Both fail for the same reason... because they assume random and strange is necessarily funny. Most of the laughs are cheap an unearned. I picture the writing going something like this: "OK, what random, preposterous thing can I have this character do to be funny in this scene?".

I really hate it when people say that as though there's some universal opinion of taste.

I'm assuming by "cheap and unearned" you require slapstick comedy that literally slaps you in the face with humor?

It's the quiet humor that makes it funny. I also don't think anything in the movie was random. Everything that happened fit in quite well with the character Max.

Well, rushmore was a lot less random than royal tenenbaums. Surely you agree that royal tenenbaums was pretty random? That movie seems to be 90% odd and random backstories and 10% absurd plot.

Quiet humor is fine. I don't really like slapstick all that much. What I do like is a movie where the plot and character development are both enjoyable. Rushmore was pretty good for the first half or so. Then it gets derailed by having is characters go to greater absurd extremes in service of a plot I don't care about. So the first half of strangeness and slightly randomness could actually have worked, if the plot had gone somewhere interesting. For some reason it turned into war of the roses. A better, similar character played by schwartzman was in Shopgirl. Instead of taking a moderately likeable character into unlikeable territory like was done in Rushmore, it was a moderatly likeable character turned into a really likeable one.

The royal tenenbaums just drowned itself in way too much character backstory and eccentric behavior. The pacing was really off too. Rushmore had ok pacing for about 2/3 of the film, but the royal tenenbaums never had ok pacing. Perhaps a different director could have done it - someone like Jeanne-Pierre Jeunet who himself took a while to master that style. But he has mastered it, because it works really well in his latest two films.
