I never gave a shit about F1 or any kind of racing that wasn't "Mario Kart." Ron Howard accomplished the impossible by making me love a film about a real life rivalry between F1 race drivers with a personality clash.
I don't know why this movie never got an appreciation thread. I feel privileged that I got to see it in a theater. Back then I was told that the movie was surprisingly good, but it was more than just a "pleasant surprise." It's actually a great movie. One of my personal top 10. Probably in my top 5.
I still feel anxiety when watching the movie and chills during the ending comments. It has some of the best editing and cinematography I've ever seen.
If you're in your late thirties or older, you might remember how people were blown away by the aerial cinematography and excitement of the movie Top Gun. For me, Rush is like that x10. It feels like Ron Howard made a better Tony Scott style film than Tony Scott himself ever did (I love Tony Scott and feel that he was always under appreciated).
One thing that pushes Rush beyond just being a great movie is this: The events and characters depicted are 99% real. Even the crashes and minor events of the races are as accurate as possible. The comments at the end are actual quotes from Niki Lauda. I get goosebumps from hearing the final words at the end.
The version on FXM is extensively censored. Watch it on Blu-Ray if you can.
