Rural connection issues.

Hi,

First Post.

A friend of mine lives well off the beaten track, and there is no adsl or cable internet. His only option is 3g internet. There is only one provider that has any coverage.
Using a 3g wifi router with a sim card in it, I am only able to get 0.5Mbit download speed in his house. But I can get 6 - 7 Mbit speed about 200 meters from his house, in his field.
Assuming I have adequate power in the field, and weatherproofing, I propose that we erect a post and use a pair of ubiquiti nanostations, one in the field and the other at the house.
The 3g modem is wifi only, and the nanostations have a wired lan input. So I plan on using a wifi bridge (tenda w301a) to pick up the wifi, and then connect to the nanostation using a cat5 cable.
At the house end, i am not sure whether to use another tenda w301a configured as a wifi AP, maybe through a switch, so that there is both wifi and wired lan connectivity.
The other option may be to use a cable router, with the nanostation plugged into the WAN port. The WAN and the ubiquitis and the 3g modem on the 192.168.0.x subnet, and the LAN side of the router on the 192.168.10.x subnet.

Is this the right way to go about this? Or am I going wrong?

Cheers.

Simon.

What provider is this? More than likely all that's needed is an outdoor antenna/amplifier that connects to the provider's cellular connection. That can then be fed to a router to distribute the usable signal indoors.

Another option to look at is a wireless ISP that offers point to point wireless in his area. Alot of them are available in rural areas.

Thanks for the reply.

We are in ireland,

There is no wireless ISP in this area that has coverage.

the provider that works is Vodafone.

I can only get 0.5Mbit in the house, I cant see how an amplifier will help us. If you know of a device that will help, please advise. We have no line of sight to the transmitter at the house, but we do in the field.

What about a different 3g router? Or a 3g modem connected to a router that'll accept a USB modem? Stick that in a small enclosure outside with the outdoor bridge to one inside.

You can slap a solar panel, battery and charge controller to power the entire outdoor thing if the power draw on the bridge and router aren't much (probably 10-15w, which means you'll probably want about a 100w panel and maybe a 65ah battery).

Or get a USB modem for a router that has an external antenna. Then run a higher gain antenna on some coax outside.
