Ok, I have a 30gb hard drive and I want to add a 20gb hard drive as a slave. What do I need to do to the 20gb to make it work? Do I need to put Windows on it? If I need to format it, how should I do it?

The only thing you'll need to do is it format it (you can even do this from windows) and make sure your jumper settings are correct for each drive. Oh yeah and one more thing, make sure they're in the right position in the IDE cable (IE the last connector on the cable is for the master and the middle is for the slave)

I had written a step by step awhile ago. Here it is. Skip down to the part where it talks about adding a drive and keeping the old drive.

Set the jumpers on the back of the HD to master (present drive) and slave (2ndary). You can plug it into the extra connector on the same IDE cable if you wish. Other than that, the BIOS will probably autodect the 2nd drive and you will be ready to rock.

You will also need to FDISK and FORMAT the drive before you can use it. You should be able to do that thru the MS-DOS Prompt in Windows.

You only need to FDISK it if you're changing files systems (NTFS to Fat 32)

Two more questions:

1) If I want to dual boot with Win98, I should just format and install it?

2) On the Maxtor Hard Drive instructions, to sum it up it says if you want to copy data from one drive to another, don't place the drive on the same cable with master slave, they should be both masters with their own interface cables. Is this true?

It doesn't make any difference. In fact you might get slowed down if you put the drive on your secondary controller and it's sharing an ATA33 cable with a CD/DVD ROM drive.

I have a 13 GB (master) and a 60 GB (slave) hanging off my primary IDE controller and it works perfectly, plus disk transfers are really fast.
