My girlfriend is running Windows XP on two different networks one at home, and one at school. The one she is running at school obviously has a backbone that is much more complicated an I can't comment on any of that, but there is some weird things happening.
First off, our computers couldn't communicate with each other after some mysterious incident. We were able to communicate with each other (namely for use of the shared printer) on our LAN (simple Linksys 8-port router), but then one day everytime she tried to access the printer it wouldn't recognize my computer, or at least wouldn't be able to communicate with it. I have no idea what happened, but after reading some posts, I am thinking it might have been caused by a windows update. But anyhow, I decided to install NetBeui and that seemd to cure it (lets not discuss the merits of NetBeui at this time).
But the other weird thing is that everytime she turns on her computer at home, a message comes up that says that there is another computer on our computer with the same username. What is going on? Why is there a confusion as to who she is? Can somebody tell me why the network is "thinking" she is not herself, but somebody else sharing the same name?
When she goes back to school, the same thing happens on her network over there too. But after I bypass that screen, everything works fine.
Also I would like to mention that she has it set so that the laptop knows that it is being run on two different networks (though for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is doing differently). Also the laptop's workgroup is set to the one that we use at home.
Can somebody tell me what this is all about?
