running ubuntu from Live DVD

I tried running ubuntu from dvd, i get to the menu and selected

start or install ubuntu

it then goes forward, doing some task then nothing, i sat in front of the comp for 20 minutes and just a blank black screen staring back at me.

any ideas?

How much RAM does the machine you are trying to run it on have? Live CDs tend to choke on machines with less than 256MB of RAM.

my system spec is

intel core 2 duo e6600
2gb 800MHz RAM

i have tried now close to a dozen time on regular and safe graphics mode to no avail. it seems to just stop at the same point each time which is really annoying. i am going to try the SUSE linux dvd that i have borrowed from my friend and also going to see if i can get another disc of ubuntu and try again.

any ideas what could be the problem, i thought there might be a problem with the disc but my friend managed to get it up and running on his PC so that rules that out.

As already stated, try the Alternate Install CD. Installing from a LiveCD is still pretty new and the Alternate Install CD using the old tried-and-tested install method.
