running two PCI-Express cards NOT in SLI

My primary pci-e slot has an ATI RadeonX800XL in it, running two monitors.
I was under the impression you could have to pci-e cards not in SLI, so I got a MSI NX6200TC card to run a third monitor.
Installed the drivers but the monitor only displays the infamous "Cannot Display This Video Mode"
I got the latest drivers, which did nothing but make Display in the control panel stop launching.
I didn't turn around that funny Asus EZwhatever card because I believe that's only for SLI mode.
Anyway thanks in advance for any tips.

so MSI replied saying, i think, that the board is SLI only, and doesn't support two pci-e card not in SLI.
Is that true?

I don't think it is possible.

You basically have to pretend to set the system up for SLI hardware-wise.

are you saying this configuration is in fact possible, if i make the SLI-related motherboard changes?

Yeah, set the motherboard up for SLI and it should work. The only sticking point you may have is trying to run ATI and Nvidia cards in the same system.

id just get pci cards rather than pci-e, one of our clients sucessfully have 16 monitors per pc, one being pcie, and other 3 being pci. but they have to be the same chipmaker, (ati wont with with nvidia, etc..)

unless ur going for gaming wiht that 3rd monitor then id vote for pci (9250's are what we are using with no lag moving from monitor to monitor)
