Running System Shock under Windows 98?

Anybody know how/if it's possible to run System Shock (not the sequel) under Windows 98? After starting a new game and putting in my name and difficulty settings, it immediately crashes to the desktop. Yes, I'm aware of System Shock Portable, but I'm trying to run an original disc-copy under a retro pc I built recently to run old games natively if possible.

Sounds like it might be a problem with a resolution switch. VESA driver?

I'm not even sure you'd want to run SS1 natively. IIRC it shipped with experimental VESA modes (like 800x600!) that were unplayable for a long time. They didn't even qualify as a slideshow on my 486SX 33MHz, it was more like, "Oh crap, I think I broke it. Oh wait, there a second frame -- Hmmm, I guess when they said, "We don't expect this to be usable for years," they really meant it." I'm not sure even a PII could handle it.

I'm running a P4 and a Voodoo 5500, so if I can get the game to run, I'm sure it'll be okay.
