Well I just built a new machine so I have my old box just laying around. When i go back to school in a little under a month, the old one will just be sitting at home. Is there anything useful I can do with it at home? Can I set up some kind of server that will either be beneficial to me, or even make me some money? its a 1.7 ghz p4 with 1gig of ram. 80 gig hd, but i can upgrade that. Is there anything I can do without completely raping the bandwith for my family while I am at school? And is there any way I can deal with problems remotely? I would not have anyone at home that could "fix" anything for me. All they would be able to do was maybe restart the computer for me if needed.

So does anyone have any ideas that would be reasonable, or would it be pretty tough to do while I am not there

if you put linux on it, you can easily administer it remotely.. put a web server on it, it won't take much bandwidth and go from there. I don't know any way to make money off of it though. At least not legally :D

Maybe you could make a pixels for sale web site :p OH wait that's been done... no ideas...

It's pretty difficult to decide what will "be beneficial to me, or even make me some money?" without knowing what you can do. The box itself will be fine for a small server, my home server is only an Ultra2 with 2x300Mhz CPUs and it's fine for just my use. Making money is a little more complicated because you have to have something that people want and I would imagine that you would be hard pressed to compete with any hosting companies with just that one machine on a home Internet connection.

1. Install SlimServer (google it).
2. Host your entire mp3 collection.
3. Give out address to select friends.
4. Charge $0.97 a download.
5. Prosper.

what about something like a small CS server? would that require better hardware/bandwith?

I don't have direct experience with CS, but it depends on how many players you want to host simultaneously. And usually bandwidth is much harder to come by than CPU time on home Internet connections.
