Running Shoes

Lifer
I went to Dick's to pick out a pair of running shoes. I had been using my old basketball shoes from HS, and on 5 mile runs they weren't quite cutting it.

After staring at 3 walls of shoes and having my eyes glaze over, I was not really any closer to getting some shoes. So many different types, size, lightness, support, etc.

Any advice? Ive looked at my footprint and it seems somewhat normal, not high arch or flat footed

Thanks in advance.

go to a store that specializes in running gear like fleet feet sports. they'll help you pick the right shoes for your feet.

Check out New Balance and Asics for running. I've used a pair of New Balance 620s X-trainers for running and they are nice, I'm sure their runners are good too.

I'm with sleep machine. I went to a store that specializes in running shoes. They did numerous tests on my stride and running habits. I ended up with the most comfortable pair of shoes i've ever worn.

Do they charge for the analysis ? How much were the shoes.

thanks

Not for people with wide feet. I don't think Asics makes any wide shoes, at least not usually. I'm surprised more shoe companies haven't figured out not all people's feet are the same width. They probably have, but it's a pain to try and manufacture so many different size and width combinations. Anyways, I'm stuck with new balance.

I have New Balance 991's in 4E, can only run in them for short periods of time, they hurt pretty bad if i try to run/jog for more than 45 seconds straight. I don't think it's wide enough or something, it's supposed to be a good shoe.

Yeah Im looking for something to run 5 miles 2-3 times a week in. At first 5 miles will take me 45 mins or so since I suck 🙂

Asics do come in different widths but they don't seem to be as widely available as NB. OP take you old shoes to a running store and they can see if you over/under pronate, etc.

FWIW I have never had shoes more comfortable than Asics, and I have been through a lot of NB.

As a few wise people have stated, don't go by anyone's blind recommendations. Unless a person knows what kind of foot you have and has seen you run and knows what they're talking about, they can't recommend a shoe. Go to a specialty running store (Like Fleet Feet) and have them analyze your running form and suggest some shoes. I'm sure that a certain pair of Asics may work wonderfully for a few people here, but if run differently they may not work for you. I have a narrow heel and find that Asics slip a lot, so I like Adidas but not many people have narrow enough feet to wear them.

Oh, and don't get Nike Frees. That's just asking for trouble.
