Running shoe suggestions?

Call me weird, but I love playing bball with running shoes ... I've tried many types of mid top bball shoes but I like the feel of running shoes.

Any suggestions? I want try something else other tailwinds ... maybe some new balance or addidas?

I have yet to find a running shoe I like better than Saucony's. Not only are they ultra comfortable, but they last a couple years and never cost more than $40-$50. Only down side is how hard they are to find sometimes.

I also like my Saucony shoes. I'm on my third pair of them right now in the past 3 years and you're right, they last a LONG time. My second favorite would be Adidas. I think Adidas have better arch support, but aren't as 'cushiony' as the Saucony.

BTW, if you need any Saucony shoes, LMK. We have lots up here in local stores. 😛

These look like the ones I bought. Been a year since I ran, though. Need to start up again. I did get some inserts to help with shin splits...wow...they worked great!

Wouldn't say I'd wear them playing basketball, though.

Adidas Superstar Millenniums. Best low-cut ball shoes I've ever used. Of course, as pointed out above, you better have some other form of ankle support.

My dad co-owns a sporting goods store and I put in 15 hours a week there so I know quite a bit about shoes and I get to see what every company has to offer.

as iamme said, playing basketball in running shoes is just asking for an injury. Running shoes are made to support your foot when your moment is going straight ahead. Doing any amount of horizontal movement in a running shoe is not healthy for your foot and isn't doing your shoes any good either.

On a side note for those interested in running shoes, Asics just released the new 1100 and 2100 models. They'll run you $75 and $90 respectively. The 1100 has less support and less gel in the sole than the 2100. The 2100's footbed is wider than most shoes so if you have a wide foot, go for it, if you have a narrow foot stick with the 1100.

Getting back to the OP's question, there are many choices in basketball shoes and a lot of it is personal preference. In the high-end, most of the Nike Shox models are good shoes. The marketing behind them is a bunch of BS but they will work fine nonetheless. There are also a bunch of expensive shoes named after athletes i.e. Garnett, Lebron, TMac, etc that are all fine but overpriced.

I'd recommend just going into a shoe store and trying a bunch of basketball shoes until you find one that suits you. You'll have a hard time finding one that feels better than a good running shoe but trust me, you really shouldn't be playing basketball in a running shoe. If you can't find a basketball shoe you like, check out the 'training' shoes the store offers. Both training and basketball shoes support your foot for horizontal motion, running shoes will not.

Agreed. I think you're totally and completely asking for trouble. Running shoes aren't built for the kinds of lateral movements you should be doing playing bball. The one time I made your mistake.... six weeks of cane + aircast. 🙁

I've always had very flexible ankles... I too preferred playing in running shoes. They seem a lot faster going up and down the floor.

My ankles are pretty flexible, but last year I had pretty bad sprain that I never completely recovered from ... every once in awhile I would get slight sprain, it'll be sore for 2-3 days and then I'm good. So yeah, I'm still doing it even though I know it's bad ... but man like drpizza says, I seem to move faster and jump higher.

I play the guard position ... during league I usually stay on top and slash, during street ball, depending on the size I would play inside as well. I think I've got above avg hops for an asian guy, before spraining my ankel I can almost touch the rim, just needed a tiny bit, but I've lost about 1-2 inches on my hops 🙁 I'm about 5'6" ...

hmm, maybe I'll try out the training shoes idea ...

i don't think it matters how "flexible" you think your ankles are. NBA players are in top condition and have the best physical therapists, but they get sprained ankles. (just find that slo-mo video of Lebron and Kobe spraining their ankles this season *cringe*).

i wear an ASO ankle brace that i've seen many NBA players wear (chauncey billups, lamar odom). if you insist on wearing running shoes, maybe you could wear these braces for support. i find they hardly inhibit any movement.

maybe it's my age, but ankle sprains are getting harder to recover from. when i was in highschool, i'd sprain my ankle and i'd be playing again by the next week. now, at 26, i'm still feeling the pain from spraining my ankle last summer 🙁
