I am building a new system with a Biostar GeForc 6100 motherboard. I plan on using the onboard video. However the native resolution on the LCD is 1280 x 1024. I don't think newer games would play well at that resolution.
So how well would it look running lower then the native resolution? Will I need a better video card just so everything doesn't look like crap when I try to play newer games at low resolutions?

General rule of thumb: Forget running games on integrated graphics. Having said that, you can run games at low (800x600) resolution on modern integrated graphics chipsets (ones made by ATI and Nvidia that is)

newer games = REAL video card

some games wouldn't display everything correctly on integrated graphics

Get at least a 6800 GT. This will allow you to play newer games, and some already released, at lower than native resolution. If you want to play at native, you will have to spend more.

6800GS then... ;) Normally scaling down on a digital LCD monitor should be reasonable... My analog LCD however... Things become a but "blurrier" I'd say... :p

Why can't anybody actually answer the question that is being asked? Getting a different card is not an option. This PC isn't even meant for gaming. However, I would, on occasion, like to play some newer games. I don't care if it is at lowest settings. Mostly I will be playing much older games.

My question was can I run newer games at lower then the native resolution. Or will it be messed up looking just because it is not the native resolution?

Thanks. So I can run some newer games at 800x600 fine with this LCD?

They might run okay at 640x480. You can use that without interpolation, just small black bars at the top and bottom.

You should be fine... :) Don't get angry, I was going to answer your initial question anyway...

Sorry for getting angry, but out of the three people that posted when I looked at the topic none of them answered my question or even said anything regarding it.

EDIT - I just re-read my OP and I can see why you guys might of postesd what you did. Sorry about that.

You can either set the video card or monitor to do the scaling. Choose the one that looks the best. I preferred my monitor's scaling with my Samsung 710T, but with my new VP930b, I prefer my video card scaling.

For the newer games, the game normally would detect the hardware and optimise the defaults accordingly. You can then change them further under that game's options / settings to 800x600 or 640x480 or 16 or 32 color, whatever you feel comfortable with.

I am playing Doom 3 on my 1905FP at 1024x768x32 2xAA (set within the game - and plays looks just great using my 6600GT) even though default is 1280x1024.
