Running RAID 1

If i want to run RAID 1, what exactly do i have to do? I dont have to have two emtpy drives, do i? Can i simply copy all the stuff from my old driver to my new drive and THEN set it up?

Thanks

yes, you can, but I wouldn't. I wouldn't put my data at risk like that. You obviously aren't sure, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Setup the RAID 1 array, get it functional, and then copy the information over. It's the safest way to go.

Thats what i meant, guess i didnt make full sense though hah. Thanks...glad i know i can do it.

Whoa, there. He's talking about using his old drive in the array, so there won't be anything left as soon as he sets up the array.

I think Fullmetal misunderstood what you're talking about doing. Once you set up the array in BIOS, your data on the old drive is gone (inacessible, anyway). You need to backup whatever data you want to save on something else, before you begin. RAID 1 uses a completely different means of writing to and reading fromthe drives. Single drive data, previously on one or both drives of a new array, won't be compatible with the array.

Yes, I might be a bit mistaken. Could you define the old and new drives? And how are you setting up this RAID array? What drives and what controller are you going to be using?

well i thought this mobo had the controller built in, but im not sure. Its the nf3 250gb lanparty ut mobo. i wanted to just get another HD and sync it with the one i have now. Essentially, i guess im wondering if i need two empty drives? can i have one that has something on it, copy it to the other, and THEN start raid 1ing?

thanks

I was having my first cup of coffee this morning and was thinking RAID 0. Sorry guys for the confusion. I wish I actually knew the answer to your question, but from what I've heard, as Fullmetal said, it can be done if you know what you're doing.
