Running problem......errr....

Okay, well I'm trying to get into shape. My university is shaped in a circle, so there is a huge circle around the school which is about 3 miles long. I've been running for a couple weeks now and I've been picking up the pace a lot. I'm not taking as many walk breaks and running longer and I don't feel like I'm having a heart attack.

Tonight, when my friend and I start running we ran for about 20 minutes straight, I'm getting better and better every night. Well tonight, when I'm stopping after those 20 minutes and start walking; I feel this tingiling sensation start in my feet and shoot up my legs and all the way to my arms. I was like WTF what is that?! I felt it before but it HURT this time, like a bunch of pricks in my hairs. It doesn't feel like a bunch of needles, but I can feel it and it is uncomfortable.

Does anyone know what teh hell this is? Is this just because I'm way out of shape? 😕
 
You're probably over extending yourself, don't push yourself too hard especially if you're just starting out. Don't run everyday, run every other day instead so your body can heal.

Also, buy new shoes if yours are worn. I had the same problem but it was solved after getting better cushioning from new shoes. It's also a bad idea to run on concrete (I'm guessing that's what your running on since it's campus), try to find a place with grass or dirt....concrete is really hard on you.
 
you've never had a cramped muscle!?

Next time before you run be sure you properly stretch. I'm no runner but I'd say that you should probably spend 10-20 minutes properly stretching out your body before you exert it like that. Maybe someone else here can suggest some stretches to do.

Okay, I thought running ever other day would make it worse. I bought a new pair of Adidas running shoes a couple weeks ago when I just started to run. And yes, I run on concrete...but when we hit the asphalt when there's no more sidewalk for a short bit, it rather feels good even though my muscles are burning. 😛
 
If it's cramping, make sure you're stretching effectively before and after running, and make sure you're eating bananas or drinking gatorade or otherwise consuming some form of potassium, as it's supposed to help. If it's impact shock, try to avoid running flat-footed, and make sure the arch supports in your shoes actually match the arches in your feet.

Does water help? I bring a bottle of water everytime I run. So should I get Gatorade now?
 
yeah, could be cramping...maybe shin splints...i would also suggest getting better pairs of shoes, new balance 991....quite expensive but they feel so good on your feet and practically do the running for you

i think gatorade works cos the minerals (salts) make you a bit thirsty so you drink more to make sure your body is hydrated...but water should be fine
 
I know exactly what you're talking about. For baseball i'm running a lot of long distance, then sprinting at the end of practice. By the end I've run so much that i'm tingling from my legs to my finger tips. I wouldn't call it a cramp though. Feels like the body needs more oxygen or something. Not a good feeling, feels like the next step after that is passing out. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water. Water or gatorade doesn't matter just make sure plenty of fluids are in your system. I don't think a bottle is enough for 3 miles.

You're probably doing to much to fast. Toss in a day off here and there.

Good luck with getting in shape, i wish more people would do what you are doing :beer:

Thanks. I'm sweating like a pig so I don't think I'm dehydrated or anything when I run. You are right, it does feel like I'm about to pass out after I stop...I'm gonna take tonight off and then run again tommorow night. See if that helps anything.
 
a tingling sensation? doesn't sound like cramps to me. If you say it starts after you finish, it might just be the blood flowing, or some side effect from the exertion. I wouldn't worry about it.

As for hydration, I've heard one should drink 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. And I'm a firm believer in gatorade or the like. It has sodium and potassium, both of which are crucial for runners. Potassium will help keep you from cramping up. Also, just for your information, I usually run 7-10 miles a day, and I don't drink all that much; a cup of hot chocolate in the morning, a bottle of iced tea or gatorade for lunch, and then I run later in the day. I've been trying to drink more, but I just don't need a lot of hydration it seems. So people have different needs for hydration. Don't force down some water if you don't feel you need it.

And finally, about shoes, if your current Adidas feel good, keep them. Do you know what model they are? Shoes are made for different types of runners, and if you're serious about running, you wouldn't want the wrong type. Believe me, I know. I bought a pair of shoes last year that turned out not to be what my feet needed, and it messed me up pretty bad. But like I said, if they feel comfortable and your feet or knees don't hurt, then it's probably good and you don't need to worry about it.

Oh yes, and btw, nipguards are a wonderful thing. It really sucks when you're running in 40-degree weather, in pouring rain, and your shirt gets wet and heavy and rubs up against your chest. I've had actual streams of blood run down my chest before, and ruined a nice white t-shirt. Chafed nipples suck.
 
heh, I started running again on the treadmill yesterday night and got the exact same pin pricks sensation you are talking about. I'm not quite sure what it is, but I brush it off as it disappears pretty quickly. It is definitely not cramping, but I have a feeling its related to your blood/oxygen rushing around that much faster, exciting the nerve endings or something. Only happens when I stop though, not when I'm running.

It will probably go away once I become a regular runner though, so I'm not too worried about it.


It's kinda like if you remain on the shitter too long reading your favorite magazine and then get up and realize you cant walk anymore and have that pin pricking sensation, coz circulation was cut off from your legs.
