Running pains..

I started a regime of running about 3 weeks ago. Warm up 5 minutes, run 60 seconds, run 90 seconds, then repeat until 20 minutes is up. I went and bought some running shoes ($80 bucks and Nike, the guy said they were good) but I'm having some pain.

I start running and my legs feel kind of tired and then during the walking periods, there is a sharp pain in the outside of my feet, mostly the left foot. It mostly goes away when I start running again, though. Today, I put a sock under my heel and it didn't help any.

I assume some pain is normal, right? I've never exercised before so I guess I should just keep going through the pain, but I'm not sure...

Hmm...being sore is normal, but you really shouldn't be feeling a sharp pain. Maybe your shoes aren't properly supporting your feet.

try out different shoes. Nikes are known to be somewhat narrow, you may need a wider shoe. Try out some adidas, asics, or new balance.

Your runs at 60s, 90s, etc., are they sprints or jogs? Maybe slow your pace and control you impact first, then speed things up.

I always use New Balance. You may want to try a pair of these as they have worked awesome for me.

did you get the nike free's by any chance...cuz you need very strong legs and feet to run in them...I bought some, and I run everyday, and my feet hurt for the first couple of days using them, but after a while your feet and legs get stronger, and now mine don't hurt at all.

these are the shoes I have.

Welcome to running. Most people can't really do it without some sort of long term pain (and anybody who's reading this who weighs as much as I did when I was 4 years old, please save it).

You can try icing it and you can definitely take some extra time off before resuming. you can also try glucosamine w/ chondroitin, to aid your joints.

Your muscles and bones are just not used to the impact yet. Keep it light to start and work your way up (better than going at it hard and then not being able to run from too much pain or worse some kind of injury). Also, don't use the sock in the heel, unless you just want to look taller.

Did you buy the shoes at a specialty running store (and they examined your feet/gait/etc) or at a general shoe store? I would recommend the former because it sounds like your shoes aren't meant for your feet.

I've been running for 20 years and can tell you there will always be some pain involved, but it shouldn't be a sharp, repeated pain. It is extremely important to get the proper shoe. The brand or price are meaningless if the shoe isn't designed for your body size, foot shape, and running style. Everyone has a different gait, and shoes are constructed differently to compensate. Try roadrunnersports.com, they have a tool that can help you determine what type of shoe you need.

The coolrunning site suggested by Ikonomi looks pretty good, too.
