running out of virtual memory

Blue screened recently. When I run 2 or even three programs I get a message that says virtual memory loss...updating page file. Even after that, I can only run a couple of programs without incident before they crash.

Also, Every time I unplug the power cord...instead of going to battery power, I get a blue screen that says dumping memory

Anybody know why this is happening?
What can I do?

possible culprit is that your pagefile is set too low for the amount needed by your applications.

what programs are you running when it crashes?

And, extending PhoenixOrion's comment, how much real RAM do you have?

Thanks for the advice...

I adjusted the page file weeks ago, but I'm not sure it was enough...It is currently labeled as 1536 MB initial size to 3072 Maximum size. In Total paging file size for all drives is has allocated 766 MB

My computer is a Dell Laptop with 1.4 Ghz and 512 MB of RAM

I'm running 3 or four programs at most. Either Word or Mozilla browsers or a combination

The amount of the virtual memory is OK. Maybe you should run some tests on the memory. I suspect it can be the memory...

pagefile size is way too high

750 min, 750 max would be fine
then install and run slysoft freeram, or superram set at 100mb recover point
