I have an old AMD quad core 960T Phenom (3ghz) machine w/4gig ram and a 1tb hd.

I have 177gb left of disk space, and the machine feel sluggish.

I just use it to surf the web, and do some light Word/Excel.

since I'm running out of disk space and Black Friday is coming, should I:
1) replace the 1tb w/a 2tb ($69)
2) replace the 1tb with a hybrid drive ($?)
3) buy a SSD and make the 1tb my D drive for data (what size ssd?)

or..?

The Crucial MX100 256GB is a really good deal at $100 or so. Looks like it's currently running $110. I'd be surprised if it didn't go on sale again before Black Friday.

there is a crucial 256gb for around $100.- at amazon or a Toshiba 512gb for $200.- at B&H photo. Depending on what you want to spend either would be good

Unless your BIOS can provide AHCI, it is not cost effective to get a SSD for that machine. Of course, there will be a slight improvement otherwise, and you can always keep ita and use it when you upgrade your system.

I completely disagree. I'm using an SSD on a Core 2 Quad that doesn't provide AHCI, but it's still very beneficial.

I bet you couldn't even tell the difference between AHCI enabled or disabled unless benchmarking.

You have 1TB drive and still have a space 177gb on it. It shouldn't feel sluggish just because of that.
A fresh install and a cleaning up of your data would probably spruce things up.

A SSD as a system drive and that 1TB being used for a data drive would rock your world

Couldn't have said it better.

I put a little 120GB M500 in my daughter's old (2007) Dell AMD dual-core laptop, and with a fresh install of W7 it's like a new computer.

I have the same experience on with few Core 2 Quad and AMD x955.

The improvement of running the main drive with the OS and main app on SSD is very pronounced.

That said there is point.

The old system would not use the whole power/speed of a state of the art SATA III.

One option is to buy an older less expensive SSD SATA II. Personally I opt not to save the $20-30 difference and buy a good SSD (like mentioned above). Doing so leaves me with a good SSD to use later on in Better upgraded system.
