Running OS on separate HD?

I bought a new Dell 8400, and just took the basic 40gb hard drive, and plan on adding a 74gb raptor to install the apps, games on..

question: will splitting the OS onto its own drive in this manner help me out in speed, stability??
 
Speed yes. Stability no difference. There are a lot of threads on this, including one that was on just the second page of this forum... Link that would have answered this question though...
