running one copy of XP on two computers

Before I get flamed let me explain this.

My school offers free Windows XP upgrades if you have an old Windows CD key dating back to windows 98. Problem is you need to go pick up the WinXP cd at academic computer services, but I needed to have a running O/S this weekend. I'm going to pick up my legit copy tomorrow.

Here's my question:
I just reinstalled Windows XP and used my roommates copy and his CD key. What happens if I activate the copy on my computer and we are both running windows at the same time? Can I get away with this for a day or two? Will his copy become invalid?

well it's kinda too late to not activate, I already screwed that up.

I'll try the x64 version though, thanks.

so does anyone know what's going to happen by running two copies like this?

Well you probably screwed your friend out of being able to reactive next time he needs to reinstall Windows.

It used to be that XP's online activation would reset after 90 days & if that hasn't changed your friend will be ok after the time has passed, otherwise he'll have to call MS & activate over the phone which is a PITA, but not the end of the world.

Instead of that, how about using a 120-day trial of WinXP Pro x64 Edition? Assuming your rig has a 64-bit CPU, that is. download it from Microsoft, burn it to CD

This would have been a much better idea.

Tell your friend not to be surprised if he gets "THE BIG BLUE ROSCOE" thats a big blue star that appears in the tool bar ,with the message, "This copy of XP needs to be reactivated." If ignored, it eventually locks you out of the install, with a blue screen telling you to reactivate. It might not take 30 days to happen either.
