Running old dos games under windows 98

Whenever I try to run a dos game in 98 I can never get the sound to work, but if I run that same game in NT it works fine. Any clues on how to run those kind of games in 98?

Do you have a dos command line like -

SET BLASTER = A220 I7 D3 T4

in your autoexec.bat file in the root directory?

If not you will need to load it. This enables sound within a dos environment.

Did u install "dos support" drivers for your live card?

Mines used to work when i had win98. Once u have them installed...u goto device manager and look for "sb16 emulation" or something...look under properties ...and check out the port/irq/dma ....and punch them into dos games "setup"...and they should work.

try a dos game that auto-detects your settings (such as original warcraft 2)....if it works it'll mean you have the sb16 emulation definately installed. Then u just have to go figure out the settings manually.

good luck.

If you have all the dos stuff for SB loaded it might be the irq that is assigned to the card. Most old dos games dont use some IRQs like irq #8 9 13 14.

I've only got a few legacy DOS games on my Win98SE machine.
But they all work thru DOS windows so I guess I'm lucky......
