running nero and other multimedia?

years ago i had a cd burned that would make a mess of the disc it was burning if i ran programs such as winamp or wmp.i was wondering if things have changed since then and would it be safe now to run multimedia while burning off cd/dvds?
 
The buffer under-run technology in burners today will usually be enough to avoid a bad burn. Multi-core CPU's should also help. Personally, I don't normally use the PC while I'm burning something but I know plenty of people who do other stuff while burning.
