Running Linux with new ASUS/AMD system

Hi,

I want to have a dual boot system Linux and MS XP Pro. I haven't built the system yet (system below), but I was curious if anyone has installed Linux on a similar system and what Linux have they had used and (of course) what issues they encountered.

This is the system (it should be in my signature, but just in case):

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
OCZ Platinum Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered
eVGA Geforce 7800GTX KO 256MB Video Card
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM SATA II Hard Drive (x2) Maybe RAID 1
BenQ Black DVD Burner DW1640
LITE-ON Combo Drive Model SOHC-5236V
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 Keyboard and Mouse
HP 23" LCD Monitor Model L2335
ThermalRock Eclipse Case
SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V 600W Power Supply

Thanks. kltaylor.

gnerally...I have found linux to be BETTER for installing on newer hardware then windows. Installing windows on a SATA controller is still a pain (esp without a floppy) but goes in no problem for Gentoo or Ubuntu.

that should work great with linux. I can't see anything that doesn't have drivers already built into most distro's.

One caveat: Linux is quite good at Just Working(tm) on pretty much anything, barring a lot of peripherals and some more esoteric components; but certain advanced functions either won't be happening, or will need some work. I would be shocked if any modern distro failed to get your card up and running right out of the box(unless it wasn't designed to, like Gentoo); but I'd be equally shocked if you got SLI mode working. Dual cards would be OK, though.
