Running Linux on External HD

Ok. I have Windows Xp Pro installed on my laptop. I WANT TO GET INTO Linux quick, but I dont want to go through the dual boot sequence for my laptops HD. Instead, I have an IOGEAR 250GB external USB 2.0 HD. I want to create a 10gb partition and install Linux on it, and have it run on through my laptop when I want it to(turning the boot up cycle to external devices as the first boot). Simple question - can this be done? Will everything work just fine? Any suggestions on an O/S for a beginner - and also one for down the road. Thanks again gang!
