Running Lights. Like or dislike?

My Focus came with running lights, that is, the head lights are always on if the key is on.
At first I thought the car was broke. Then I read they were called "running lights". Then, I wanted to have that feature dismantled. But, as I drove around daily, I now think running lights actually are a good feature. So many times, a car will pull up on a side street, then start to turn out right in front of me. But then, they do a double take and come to a full stop before pulling out. I think its the running lights they notice. And when a car has its head lights on in motion, its harder to judge its speed. It plays mind games with the driver, so that driver that was going to pull out in front of me, doesn?t. This happens all the time now, and I think its the running lights keeping those drivers at bay.

Dislike. Too many tards with them don't ever turn on the headlights, and thus I end up almost rear ending them in the middle of the night because I can't see them.

Good point. A flaw they need to fix. Its too easy to think all your lights are on (cause the headlights are), when actually the running lights are all thats on.
They need a night sensor or something.

if they are going to make them be on whenever the key is on they should just make all the lights be on.. tail lights included

actually, sensors are a bad idea. Right now a lot of cars come with sensors that automatically turn the lights on when it gets dark, so people just never bother turning them on manually.

The sensors work OK at night, but if it's raining/snowing/foggy, there is still enough light to see by, and the sensor doesn't trip. Which means other people can't see you, even though YOU can see OK.

I like running lights, plus my S10 crew cab came with auto headlights, they just turn on when it STARTS to get dark. they even get triggered when pull into a parking garage. i think all trucks/cars should have this.

I've never had an encounter -- not that I recall, anyway -- with someone with DRLs on at night but no headlights. I've come across a few with no lights at all, but maybe I'm just lucky.

I'm planning to rig up a DRL function for my highs when I upgrade them to HID (I have factory HID projector lows). Don't worry, I use my high beams responsibly. 😉 They're only on late at night on back roads with no traffic in front or oncoming. I know what it's like to be blinded at night. I think the soft glow of low-current DRLs looks really nice.

And about automatic headlights, I use the ones in my car almost exclusively. They turn on if it's even slightly dark. They come on if I start the car under a carport, even in the middle of the day, or if I enter a parking garage. I also set them to come on automatically when I turn on my windshield wipers. There have been a couple times I had to turn the switch manually because of fog or something, but usually they take care of it.
