Running LCD monitor at non-native resolution

If I run my monitor (LCD) at it's native resolution, I have to increase the dpi size to around 130% in order to have the font large enough to read. Is this ok to do? Is it better to do this, or run it at a non-native resolution?

Whatever is comfortable for you to read, really. It's not like you'd be doing damage to the monitor by running it in a non-native resolution.

Increasing the DPI of the font is ideal because it retains the image quality advantage of running the monitor at its native resolution. However, I've found that some program won't "look right" if the fonts are enlarged.

If you run anything but native res on a LCD, it will look like garbage, especially if the only alternative resolution you like is not the same aspect ratio as the native resolution (i.e. 1024 x 768 on 1280 x 1024 17" monitor)

internet explorer and firefox allow you to zoom in text pretty easy.. that is what I do, and i keep my DPI at 96, because otherwise it is known to mess up some icons like in office 2003. There are plugins for Firefox for fine tuning of zooming feature.
