Running Laptop 24/7 Under Stress

Hey, I have two Dell Latitude CPx500GT laptops, (500 Mhz PIII, 256MB RAM) and I was wondering if I had anything to worry about with setting these up to run 24/7 to crunch Folding@Home workunits. Do I have to worry about it overheating or fire hazards, or should I be fine?

Generally speaking, running laptops under heavy load 24/7 is NOT a good idea. Laptops, by their very nature, cannot get rid of heat as well as desktops, so running them that hard will make them get HOT. One way you can cut down on the heat is to get them off of the desk itself (use either a podium coolpad or something with fans in it made to help keep laptops cool). Granted, you won't have as much problem with it being winter, with the lower temps right now. You DON'T want to do this during the summer, unless you air condition the room the laptops are in to about 65F.

I run Folding@Home on my laptop and it's fine. As long as you give the laptop and the AC adaptor proper ventilation you should be fine. Thanks for contributing to the TeAm (if you aren't you should 😛)!
