Running: I'm now under 30 minutes for 3 miles

A while ago I started a thread about how to get into a better cardio-vascular shape. I'm in a very good physical condition (skinny, pretty ripped) but for some reason I could never run for extended distances. So I started an intensive 3 times a week cardio program.

Now I'm able to finish 3 miles in under 30 minutes, or if I go all out I can do 1 mile in under 8 minutes. The biggest problem so far has been recovery - running uses a lot of the muscles that I haven't developed, mostly in my ankles. It's also fairly hard on the knees, which makes running 3 times a week pretty difficult. I'm hopping this will go away after a few more weeks.

Now, as far as my goals go - I want to be able to do 3 miles in under 25 minutes within 1 month. The really ambitious goal is to do 3 miles in 21 minutes by May. What do you guys think?

Awesome. Dont push TOO hard, as injury can set you back further than you realize. As for your 7 minute mile over 3 miles goal...a good one to have. Maybe push it back towards end of June to give yourself a bit more time to develop the muscle that is required. If the soreness and stiffness gets less by the end of the month, May would be perfect. Good luck, and dont give up.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that once some of this cold 20-30F weather goes away I'm going to be outside jogging, I hate this cold weather!

Nice job getting your 5K time under 30 minutes. People that don't run usually have no idea that actually completing a 5K is an accomplishment. Keep it up!

I ran 4 miles to-day. I didn't time it though. 😕
I'm planning on doing 6 to-morrow! 😀

edit: didn't mean to threadcrap - congrats on keeping your resolve! and good luck!

When I was in CC, the understanding during practice was that a 10 minute mile wasn't a mile (didn't count towards practice goals, so we'd have to do another one).

Aside from that, and the fact that I'm now an out of shape office pig, congrats. 😀

I've been starting again and can barely pull off 12 minute miles during 30-45 minute runs.

You're telling me. I went to highschool with the Torres twins - same year, too. We dominated the competition largely due to those two monsters.

Needless to say, none of us exactly kept up with them in gym class. 😱

not hard at all, I can do 3 miles in about 18-19 minutes and it didn't take me that long to get to where I am, just don't over do the running, i.e. every single day and also pay for the more expensive running shoes they are worth it.
