running hot and not sure why....

i recently upgraded to a K6-2 550 and now i am running pretty hot around 52 degress cel... so far i've added to more case fans (one pulling air in and the other sucking it out)..then the next part that is the kicker...I have a Alpha PAL3065 heatsink/YS techfan on the freaken CPU and its still that hot...from what i here that CPU is no match for that heatsink...esp. since i havent even overclocked anything..my ambient temp is 33 degess Cel. so the case itself is cool its just the CPU that is heatting up...any thoughts on to why??? and could it possibly be a problem with the CPU that a new CPU would fix??

my other system specs:
AMD K6-2 550
Alpha PAL3065 heatsink/fan
Epox MVP3-G5
128 megs PC 100 Ram
Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
Storm platnuim sound card
Generic netwrok card
Generic Modem
Promise Ultra IDE controller card
36 Gig maxtor Hardrive
6 Gig HD
1.6 Gig HD
Acer 32x CD-ROM
Mitsumi CD-RW
300w Powerman Powersupply

thanks for anyhelp and thoughts!!

I assume that you put a thin layer of thermal paste between the top of your CPU and the bottom of the HSF. Does your Alpha have a raised area, and or four white plastic feet on the bottom of it? The feet make the HSF fit securely on top of a P3E and CII. They must be removed for the HSF to sit properly on a K6-2.

Yep.

I would guess that the cpu is not seated well, or you have too little/too much thermal grease.

(or the temperature is not being read correctly by your monitoring program)

first off thanks guys for replying...yea i put a thin layer of thermal past on my CPU...just enought to kinda darken the letters just a bit...and the new Alpha's dont have the plastic feet anymore so its completly flat one the bottom and its very tight on the processor esp. when compared to my old heatsink...i've thought about the temp being reported wrong to but is there away i can really check this to find out??? Right now i'm useing Mother Board Monitor 4.18 to check the temp and the temp it reads is the same as what is read in my BIOS so i think its working properly but maybe them temp is just generaly being miss reported in both the program and BIOS. thanks again

eloric,
Same problem here. I put the K6-2 550 in awhile back and it runs hot. I've had it back to the dealer, checked ok. Took the m/b in and ran it to make sure voltages were ok, checked ol. Installed a new power supply, changed video card, added a case fan, thermal paste and still runs hot. Especially if any intensive games are run. I'm using the Globalwin VFP32 fan/heatsink, but I've tried two other coolermaster setups, still the same. I've tryed cpuidle and as long as no games are running the temp stays fairly good, 108-111F. This am I'm trying it at 500 and 2.2v instead of 550/2.3. Without cpuidle running and no games, just surfing, the temp is setting at 118F. Beats me why it does this. On mine as the temp gets to high the system slows down and the mouse gets jerky. I'm about ready to try some different ram to see if that changes anything. I'm fast running out of ideas.

Racer,

I guess its just K6-2 550 thing about running hot...i've been running fine now for a few days with the CPU temp at 50 degrees cel or around there anyways...i must admit though that mine never really effected my mouse or anythign it just normaly gave me blue screens of death and illegal ops. or shut itself down...good luck on getting your case and CPU cool and stable...i have 2 extra case fans and i migh be adding a third soon again good luck

I have the k6-2 550 on an asus p5a-b board and watercooled it runs 47c (117F) in a room with the temp sitting at 78F. The heatsink I had for it kept it at about 51C. And the system is stable...no heat related problems.

From all of the other posts here and at other sites (ohmygosh! can I say "othersites" :) ) I would say it is a hot running cpu and since we are all around the same temps (well, most of us) this is pretty normal. I know when I went from my k6-2 350 to k6-2 450 the old sink could not handle it and the new sink wouldn't handle the k6-2 550. By the way my sinks are all generic ones bout for 6 bucks or so at the local computer fairs...except for the Golden Orb which I still haven't used! It's too nice looking to go in my case without a window and some lighting!

I moved my computer from out of the enclosure on the desk for it, tryed the case fan both ways, blowing out seems best and trying Rain now instead of cpuidle. So far it seems to be working. The highest temp so far has been around 122F. Runs stable, so hopefully that will take care of it.

you guys too huh? my K6-3 428mhz (oc'd) runs at 49C. I always thought it was pretty high too. I've been going crazy modifying the front of the case to get in as much cool air as possible, and even ordered a alpha 6035. what's the deal?

Hey Guys

I noticed this problem too with my 2nd system (k6-2 550 @120*5=600mhz @ 2.6v). The cpu's cooled with an "old" Alpha PFH6035, and the base of it is very hot to the touch. Runs fine enough, though I don't know how hot becuase I've got a motherboard that doesn't appear to have hardware monitoring (Gigabyte GA-5ax Rev5.2). On a side not, the increased bus speed lets the K6-2 compete very well in memory benchmarks with my Celeron550...

just my two cents....

it looks like Rain is the basic solution. I jus installed it, and now my cpu dropped from 47C to 35C. It's now actually cooler than the system temp by a degree!

I guess this is the right place for this... I just bought a K6-2 550 and had a plethora of problems with it... memory was bad and I think the chip was bad too... I have another one running and it seems that everytime I try to do anything different with my PC, it crashes... on the most simple of things, like opening the help file in Acid... I think the problems are heat related, right now I have the crappy cooler that I bought the computer with... I thought about the GoldenOrb but am not sure if it fits or not... forgot the conversion... but at one point my CPU was running at 180 F, 142 F on chip (I presume this meant on top of the chip)...

is this causing my problems?

infiniD,

I know two guys at the place I work with k6-2 500mhz systems...both recent upgrades. The first guy had his installed at the shop and it crashes about 30-45 mins after startup due to heat, even with the cover of the case off. I lent him a heatsink/fan I bought for my k6-2 550 and it wouldn't even fit his MB..his old one was WAY too small for the heat output of that cpu and that's what they gave him at the store. So I gave him a smaller one I had for a 450mhz and he has no more problems.

The second guy got the k6-2 500 mhz cpu and...get this...the guy at the shop only gave him a FAN to put on it, no heatsink. A heatsink with a good amount of fins and a good fan only costs about 6 bucks at some of the computer fairs around here so I am sure it would be a cheap way to be sure if CPU heat is the problem. With the readings you give I have no doubt you can get the temp down to around 125F...unless you are living in an oven with the room temps at 100f all the time?
