well, overtime it might be..depending on the manufacturer...i ran a western digital caviar 60 gig upsidedown for a year with no problems =P but there was really not much of a reason to do it aside from laziness on my part -.-;

No, it's not a problem. I don't see why you'd do it, but drive orientation is rather unimportant.

Installing with the PCB up is to be discouraged as it will generally put it in harm's way.

It's best to install vertical or horizontal not at an angle from either.

The above is not a must do but good work practice.

I've had mine running upsidedown for about a year now, no real problems. I didn't really have much of a choice though, if I put it rightside up I wouldn't be able to hook up the PCI-E connector to my video card. It really sucks, but it's fine.

as long as the hard drive is not running slanted or at an angle leaning sideways, it will run fine.

GalvanizedYankee has it right. For safety, you really shouldn't install it upside down -- unless you've never, ever dropped a single thing in your life, and will never, ever do so in the future.

As for running it at an angle, some manufacturers have said that it's okay to do so. Others still recommend only vertical or horizontal orientations. If you're paranoid, go to manufacturer's site and check for yourself.

but if you think, those massive drive arrays for huge rack servers are all lined up vertically.

looks to me like you started it ;)

i'm just wondering, why would it be ok for it to be vertical, horizontal or upside-down but not slanted?

If you run the drive upside down, all the information on the drive will fall out into the bottom of your computer!

Odd. I would have thought "lined up vertically" would fall under a vertical or horizontal orientation. Thinking otherwise would make my head hurt.

Some manufacturers don't say it's okay to run at an angle (aka slanted) mainly because they haven't tested it at that angle.
