Running Half Life 2 in Direct X 8.1?

How do I do this?

Easy in Steam right click on Half Life 2 and go to "Launch options" . Add the line -dxlevel 81 and there you go.

The other commands for forcing a DirectX level are:

-dxlevel 70 (DirectX 7)
-dxlevel 80 (DirectX 8.0)
-dxlevel 90 (DirectX 9.0)

More importantly, why?

Only reason I can see is if you've got an FX <5900, which even the FP16 paths can't save.

Still the FX cards (even the 5900) default to DX 8.1 anyway.

The 5950 Ultra also defaults to DX 8.1

dxlevel 80 actually uses 8.1 not 8.0 I'm not sure how to force regular 8.0
