Running faster/longer on a treadmill...

I don't run on treadmills often, because I find it to be easier than running outside. Recenetly Ive been forced to though, I had ACL reconstructive surgery and can't run on uneven ground yet, so Ive been doing my jogging on a treadmill. I can easily run for 10 minutes without being winded, and thats after a good 5 months of very limited activities because of my knee. I would have figured I was out of shape, but I guess not.

That brings me to my question though. Does it seem to you guys that running on a treadmill is easier, and maybe that you would be able to obtain faster mile times on one? And if so, why is this?

i run outside, i get bored way to easily on a treadmill, it feels like time/miles just crawl, i guess i enjoy being outside

Running on a treadmill is easier on your body Cuda1447, so I would say it's easier to get faster times on one :)

Easier because of shock absorption or something along those lines? Also, would it mean that you get a better workout by running outside on real ground? Or is it actually less productive because it provides unneccessary shock to your body?

I am always wondering about this. If the treadmill reading said I ran a mile, did I really run a mile?

Easier because of the low impact on your body :)

i run on the hs track or on the erie canal trail, both are very easy on your joints.

Running on a treadmill is easier because it does alot of the work for you. I forgot the exact percentage, but the tradmill actually helps to "propel" you. So if you want a decent workout, try running with an incline. You're definately getting more of a workout when running outside than on a treadmill.

Edit: Didn't need to quote OP. Also, I never stop moving within the 45 minutes.

I run/walk on a treadmill for 45 minutes minimum. I do it at a constant 3.0 incline. Minimum speed 4mph, maximum 7mph. What this means is that I will usually run at 6mph until I can't anymore, then step it back to a 4mph speedwalk until I can run again. Towards the end of the 45 minutes I step the 6mph portion up to 7mph.

If you think you are out of shape, I would be surprised if this would be easy for you.

Well, like I said I just had knee surgery, so Im not really interested in pushing myself that hard yet. I was more just curious than anything else. My knee has a hard time holding up for 10 minutes of running right now, just endurance wise I have no problems. Which is what surprised me.
