Thanks to all your help here I orderd 2 x 144 opti's based on the info from anandtech articles and from info here in the forms.

"You know you can run 2 1XX chips. Unless AMD has changed them, which I doubt, the 1XX series chips are the same as the 2XX chips.
So get a couple OEM 144's and run them.

Anandtech's article talked about the 1XX, 2XX, and 8XX all being the same right NOW. But in the future they will probable lock them out."

WELL THE FUTURE HAS COME UPON US! I installed the pair and the system would not even video out. I remove one of the processors and it works. Just to be parinoid I also ordered a pair of 240's and everything works great. The version of 144's that i recived ended with "AJ". I used the MSI Master 2 FAR MOBO with the VIA K8 chipset.

Oh man, I told you to get the 200-series! Can you send the 144's back? If not, I might be interested in buying one of them from you, but I'm not sure right now. Sorry you got talked into that by someone who didn't know what they were talking about. There seem to be quite a few around here who don't.

I was able to return the 144's though I had to pay neweggs 15 percent restocking fee. It was a gamble and even though it did not work It was worth a shot.

Next time, call up NewEgg and ask for an RMA. If you actually call, they USUALLY waive the 15% fee. I ordered a Hitachi SATA drive from them 2 weeks ago. When I opened it up, I found out I had actually ordered an IDE version. The package was opened, but I called NewEgg and told them I ordered the wrong part. They gave me an RMA with NO restocking fee even though it was MY blunder.

Newegg is usually pretty good about waiving the restocking fee as long as you are going to buy another part from them, otherwise they are kinda strict.

I am not sure if the 1xx series were ever made to run in dual mode. I heard 2 of the 3 hypertransport lines are cut, or something like that. Can anyone back me up on this?

I used the MSI K8T Master2-FAR motherboad. I tried putting the 144's back in before i shipped them back after I had the 240's running and still no luck. Appears to me that this no longer works.

I was thinking that you had to mod the cpu to make an Opteron 1xx work in an SMP config. Anyone know for sure? Or have a link to adaboy's original post?
