I know this has been asked and answered many times. But the search function on this forum is, bar none, the worst I've ever seen.

Any way, I think there are a few of them out there - but I can't remember the names of them. I remember that there was an opensource one that worked the best.

Thanks

Yes, Dosbox will handle almost anything except some of the mid-90s protected mode games, which run too slowly even on fast CPUs. Be sure to switch to the dynamic core in the dosbox.conf file for optimal performance.

thanks guys

I have one other quick question thats along these same lines.

For older Windows 95/98 games, is there anything that works like DOSBox?

I have a couple games I want to play, and they don't run right in XP even when I enable Windows 95/98 compatibility mode on the EXE. I've even tried NT compatibility mode with no success.

I have been told there are Win98 emulators out there but my understanding is they run from within MacOS.

You can still buy new copies of Win98se on eBay. It's harder to add it after you already have any NT-based OS installed, but there is a way to do even that, however, you'll have to visit the Annoyances.Org web site and look around on there. Anyway, that's the best way to run the old games (it does require hanging onto at least one AGP-slotted system, since drivers for PCI-e haven't been offered for Win98se).

You've probably tried this, but if you haven't... you can right click a shortcut to the app you want to run, click the compatibility tab, check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" checkbox, and then use the drop down list to select the operating system. Choices are Win95, 98/ME, NT4, 2000. Doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.

From what I've experienced, DOS games run fine under XP so long as they run at 640x480. Don't expect much in the way of sound though.

Hence why you run something like Dosbox or VDMSound in order to run the program perfectly.

I use to love VDMSound. But I've eventually switched to Dosbox as it just runs things better.

I'm curious, I haven't run a DOS game in a long time...back on W2K. It was Tomb Raider I, but it was so pixelated that it wasn't nearly as enjoyable as it should have been. Would DOSBox change this, or would it be about the same?

EDIT: Come to think about it, it was on W98SE that I played it, I had it dualbooted. So I bet that is as good as it would get.
