running dos games in win2000

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way that i can run dos games in win2k... something like a dos emulator..

if not in win2k then in Linux with dosemu

post your thoughts and answers

Win2k has a DOS emulator (cmd.exe), but it doesn't allow direct access to the hardware (so no sound etc.). I haven't tried DOSEmu yet.

Depends on the game. I've gotten a few DOS oldies working (Starcon2, XCOM2) to some degree, but some of them lock up or have really distorted sound. Best advice is to try and experiment.

You can also make a custom win98 boot disk if you use fat32. Just have to reboot to play DOS games.

I run an SNES emulator in win 2k, it's not too bad, but no sound. You can usually click on the executable and have it create a .PIF. You can then alter some properties of the DOS emulation.

i've tried multiple dos games in win2k (xcom, alone in the dark, the origional duke nukem, simcity) didnt have any problems with any of them
i've had to set them to fullscreen and stop some other programs in the backgroud so they dont disturb me (they often dont like multi-tasking) but other than that i havent had any problems

rydog, you have stolen my icon! i thought i had finally found one that nobody else was using, and there you are! man i tell you anandtech needs to have more icons
